Three On Thursday

My summer blog schedule is over and I’m going to continue doing Three On Thursday anyway. It’s a good way to catch you up on the random things that I want to share but that aren’t really enough for blog posts of their own. Here we go!

  1. We had mini splits installed last week and will be using them to both cool and heat our house going forward. Our furnace needed to be replaced anyway (our maintenance guy suggested this about 4 years ago, actually) and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is offering a great incentive right now that includes a $10,000 rebate and 0% financing on the rest of the cost. The company we used was awesome to work with, super professional, and the whole thing was pretty fast and painless.
  2. What’s not so fast and painless is the next home project: a complete make over of our living room. We are replacing our wood stove with a gas fireplace. We are taking down an old mantel from a boarded up fireplace. We are removing the brick wall and hearth that we had for the wood stove. We are having book cases and cabinets built on the wall where our television is and all of the wood trim is being replaced. We are also installing hard wood in the living room, dining room, and front entryway. They started work this week and right now everything still in the room is covered in plastic. The bricks are gone and the outside chimney is down and every day brings something new . . . and stressful. It’s going to be amazing but getting to that point is not going to be without everything from small annoyances to major pains.
  3. I started doing “morning pages” about 6.5 weeks ago. This is a process where you sit down and hand write 3 pages of stream of consciousness every morning before you do anything else. The idea is that it removes all the junk in your head to make room for creativity. It comes from the book The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and I’m committed to completing the entire 12 week program . . . but . . . there is a fair amount of God stuff that I’m not into . . . and these things called “artist dates” where I’m supposed to take myself to places that are interesting or inspiring and do things . . . and I’m not really into that either. As a writer, though, the morning pages process is something I’m enjoying.

And that’s all I’ve got for you this Thursday, dear readers.

  1. Sending good home reno vibes your way. Will you end up camping in the trailer a few nights? We did our whole house about two years ago. Totally worth it in the end, but whoo-boy in between.

  2. Your home renovation sounds like it will be lovely at some point in the future, but it will be a while before you’re sweeping up the last of the sawdust. Just imagine yourself putting books on your new bookshelves, and be sure to give F&G extra snuggles. I can’t imagine they are going to be too happy during the process!

  3. Oh yikes, Carole! The completed living room sounds like a great reward, but the getting there is the pain. Your writing journey sounds interesting! I hope your writing time unleashes the creativity! XO

  4. Oh, I feel your pain, Carole! I had major renovations done about 20 years ago, and I am contemplating some more soon. But I hate the chaos and mess, so I am trying to talk myself into it. I bet Fred and George are not pleased! I am sure it will be beautiful when finished. Keep your eye on the prize.

  5. Oh, a renovation project of that scope is going to be . . . quite intrusive. But, oh you are going to LOVE it when it’s finished. Hang in there, my friend, and keep your eye on the prize! I did the Julia Cameron/Artist’s Way thing several years ago. Still (pretty much) keep up with the morning pages . . . but the “artist dates” turned out to be my favorite part — and something I still do on the regular! Enjoy!

  6. That is a BIG renovation project. Hope it all goes smoothly and as quickly as possible. Not only will you and Dale be disrupted to a degree, but also Fred and George. Im curious what prompted the removal of the wood stove, to be replaced with a gas fireplace. I know wood stoves can be dirty/messy, but I love the scent of burning wood. I know several people who replaced their wood burning fireplaces with gas ones…but I would miss the “real” flames and the scent.

  7. I hope the reno goes as easily and quickly as possible! Those things are always stressful, and dealing with the dust and the displacement is no fun. At least you are getting this done at a time when you can spend time at home outdoors!

  8. Mini splits are great. Be sure to follow the cleaning schedule for the filters–ours are very easy to clean (Mitsubishi) and it helps immensely with heating and cooling.
