Read With Us: The Fall 2024 Promo Post

Today I’m here to remind you about and promote our current Read With Us Selection, Intermezzo by Sally Rooney. Kym has a wonderful page on her blog with everything you need to know about the book, including a synopsis and background of Sally Rooney and details on our Zoom discussion. It’s on January 7, 2025 at 7pm if you haven’t already marked your calendars.

Today, I find myself in the rather awkward position of trying to hype you up to read a book that I personally have not yet read. Have I had opportunity to read it? Yes. Have I gotten it from Libby twice and sent it back? Yes again. Have I put it off on purpose? Yes times three.

It often happens with our book club that I read the books early, both for the sake of recommending a title to Kym and Bonny and also because, overachiever that I am, I like to cross things on my to-do list off early. But that occasionally backfires and I read a book so early that by the time our discussion rolls around I have forgotten pertinent details and find myself flailing about a bit when it comes to participating with the group. Hence my decision to put this one off for a little while.

Rest assured, I will have read it by January 7th. And, despite the fact that I haven’t yet started, I believe wholeheartedly that this is an excellent choice for Read With Us. For one, it’s Sally Rooney. Her writing is spare and brilliant and nuanced. She’s gotten quite the full court press over this new book and I find that highly amusing because I don’t get the impression that she’s at all comfortable with the attention. From everything I’ve heard about the book, it is still very much a story with her signature focus on relationships and communication struggles, but it differs from her earlier works with a more contemplative tone, as she explores the psychological and emotional toll of love and loss.

All of that leads me to anticipate that it will be highly discussable and I hope you will join Bonny, Kym and I and read Intermezzo with us.

  1. I bought the book and still read it early so I could write my post. I wish I had been smart like you and waited because I know I’m going to have to reread it in early January.

  2. I do think this will be a great discussion kind of book, and I’m eager to talk about it! I am a Sally Rooney fan, and wouldn’t have been able to wait that long to read it . . . And I’m sure I’ll read it again before we meet in January (because that’s how I roll).

  3. I read it early (because I thought if I didn’t when Libby offered it to me, I’d be waiting months and months to get it again), so I will likely need a refresher before our discussion. I’m sure we’ll all have a great Zoom about it!

  4. I ended up getting the book as an add on for Book of the Month as I wasn’t sure when it would come through at the library. I plan to read it some time in December.
