Read With Us: The Intermezzo Wrap Up
It’s time to put the fall session of Read With Us behind us and that means concluding our time talking about Intermezzo by Sally Rooney.
We had an interesting Zoom discussion last Tuesday night with 13 of us attending. Our icebreaker question, always wonderfully asked by Kym, was to tell everyone the best book we read in 2024. The answers were great and I’ve added a few new titles to my TBR as a result.
With regards to Intermezzo, there were a few who hadn’t read the book and, of those who had read it, several people didn’t like it much. While that might bother some book club hosts, for me I think it makes for a better discussion. I mean, who wants to sit around looking at each other and agreeing on how great (or not great) a book is?
I will say that our discussion was not as . . . lively . . . as it sometimes is. It felt more subdued but again, that’s not a bad thing. We talked a lot about grief and how it impacts people. We talked about family relationships and how we aren’t always good to one another. We talked about societal expectations and age gaps in relationships. And we talked about Sally Rooney and how she maybe isn’t for everyone but there’s no denying she is a talented and ever-growing writer.
The one thing that remains consistent for every one of these sessions is how much Bonny, Kym, and I appreciate those of you who attend. We love choosing a book for you and then hearing about your experience while reading it. When I tell you that we never expected it to grow into something so meaningful for us, I mean it. And yet, here we are, over 5 years into this, and we’re truly grateful to each of you for choosing to Read With Us.

And we are grateful to you three for hosting the club and keeping it going. It’s a great community and our Zooms are always interesting and fun. So, thank you!
It’s really been five years?! Wow. Time flies! I so appreciate all the work that the three of you do, and I completely agree that the discussions are always better when there’s a variety of opinions about the book.
I’m always grateful that so many people choose to . . . Read With Us. The Zooms feel like a “real” (in person, I mean) book group. (Although the hosts never need to clean their house or provide the wine!) Thanks for a great wrap-up, Carole.
First, I want to thank Kym, Bonny, and you for bringing this group together! It is THE BEST book club ever. Period. We are a great group of readers which makes our discussions so good! I think that the discussion is always better if we all did not like the book the same ways.
Second, I am happy to have read Intermezzo, because if it were not for this group I would not have finished the story. So, thank you!
I can hardly believe that it’s been five years! I wasn’t sure what an online book group would look like when Kym originally proposed it, but we’ve got a really great group of people and I’m grateful for all that it has added to my reading. (And I can’t wait for the next book!)
Thank you for welcoming me in as a new-comer! I’ve enjoyed the discussion, and the push to read books that I might not otherwise consider.
I am looking forward to joining your next Zoom bookclub chat if I am able. I think I would really enjoy it. I didn’t know it was acceptable to zoom in if you had not read the book!
This was my second time on the call even though I have read every book along with the three of you. I will admit to not having too much to say this time. My mother died December 2nd and talking about grief wasn’t something I really wanted to do right now. I enjoyed hearing everyone’s views on the book.
Carole, I want to thank you, Bonny, & Kym for hosting these book discussions! I’ve enjoyed every discussion I’ve attended and even if I didn’t like a book, the discussions always give me a deeper appreciation for the book. I look forward to our next book!
Thank-you Carole, Kym and Bonny for making my reading world so much bigger and better. Read with us is always a great evening!
