Just Now

I’m continuing to update my journal with a currently type of post every Friday and I’ve taken to calling it Just Now. A snapshot of my life in a given moment. Today I’m sharing some just now things with you all.

Reading: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria E. Schwab

Watching: House of the Dragon, season 2. It really makes me wish I could have a dragon.

Listening: A new to me podcast called Community Catalysts by Matt Lehrman. Matt was a keynote speaker at the conference I attended last week and this podcast focuses on community leadership and individuals who exemplify that. I find it uniquely relatable.

Making: Socks. I actually pulled them out and knit the other day on the couch while both cats were sleeping either on my lap or next to me and, while they both lifted their heads as the smell of yarn wafted through the air, they settled right back to sleep. This is progress.

Planning: Our annual Oscar movie quest. There are 10 best picture nominees this year and so far we’ve only seen 2, Wicked and Conclave. I’ve got 12 days to watch 8 movies. Wish me luck!

Feeling: Anxious and scared about what’s happening to our Constitution.

Learning: To use my new Oura ring. I had an Apple watch for ages but it was too much after a while with the text messages and notifications and I stopped wearing it. The Oura ring is more health focused and comfortable enough to wear overnight which will provide me with sleep info, too. I’ll keep you posted.

Worrying: About my dahlia tubers. I’ve had good luck storing them in our basement the last couple of winters but we don’t have a furnace anymore so it’s colder down there than it used to be. Add to that some of the very cold weather we had in January and are having again now and I’m concerned.

Waiting: For the hellebores to bloom. I checked last week and nothing was happening and now we’ve got snow and tons of ice so I can’t get to that side of the house safely to look but maybe by the time this melts (which won’t be until next week from the sounds of things) they will be showing signs of progress.

Dreaming: Of summer camping trips.

  1. How interesting about your Oura ring… Steve is in that camp about the Apple Watch as well. I am at a point in my life where I need a “notification reminder” occasionally… (adding in a new medication to my day I am very grateful for my watch reminding me about it!) Good luck on your Oscar watch frenzy! YOU CAN DO IT! (and you are not alone in feeling anxious, worried, and downright scared about how fragile democracy is)

  2. Shhhh! But that sounds like progress with Fred and George.

Anxiety about the constitution? Is it anxiety if it’s a real threat? Definitely worth channeling that into messages to your elected officials. Possibly while snuggling Fred and George for a dose of kitty support. You’re not alone, keep in touch with your community, personal and literal.

  3. I have channeled my anxiety into physically exhausting projects. So far, so good, but I am running out of gas, so we will have to see how long I can keep it up. Yes, please update on Oura ring! I have thought about getting one, but I, too, do not like all those notifications from most wearables. I always look forward to your Oscar posts. Snuggling and knitting sounds fabulous, and I will be doing that soon with a newly adopted dog! Probably the best anxiety reducing thing for these times.

  4. Ummmm. You do know you can opt out of the text app and turn off the notifications on your Apple Watch, don’t you? 😉 It sounds like life is rolling right along in all the best ways, Carole. Except for that constitution issue, of course. XO

  5. A friend in NC just wrote me that her hellebores were blooming (just starting), so it may still be a bit early for MA. Plus snow and ice…I want to see Conclave; Fletch wants to see it but not as desperately as me. Looking forward to both your Oscars post and your book review post!

  6. I love that you can knit without interference and with F&G on your lap, too! Somehow that makes it a little easier to face the looming Constitutional crisis. I do love recommendations for escape TV watching, so I’m going to check out House of the Dragon. I want a dragon, too!

  7. I’m happy to hear that F&G are learning and are allowing you to knit a bit. Fingers crossed it continues that way! I’ll be interested to hear about your Oura experience. I’ve turned many notifications off on my Apple watch, but I can understand that the constant pinging can get annoying.

As for the state of the country. Yeah. I wish we had dragons so we could burn it all down and get back to a better place.

  8. Oh boy, you’ve watched ONE more Best Picture nominee than me… don’t think I’m going to make it!! haha. Hope you’re having better luck. And I hope your dahlias are doing OK!!

  9. I have that book sitting by me waiting. Have 2 book club books to read and then I have to jump into some of the ones I want to read. I’m curious about your oura ring. I have a Fitbit watch and I really only use it for the sleep info as I used to have trouble sleeping and it’s been interesting seeing how my nights go. Hope your Dahlia’s are ok. I so enjoy seeing your’s and Cara’s all summer.
