Weekend Glimmers, With Oscar Talk
Well that weekend passed in the blink of an eye! I suppose that’s what happens when you’re having fun, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Doreen came to visit and watch the Oscars with us. I made Swedish meatballs for us on Saturday night and we enjoyed a cozy night of comfort food and good music. On Sunday morning I made waffles and bacon (a fine way to start the day) and we hung out and caught up some more. It’s easy to pass the time doing relatively nothing when you’ve been friends for over 40 years.

Hannah came over mid afternoon and we watched the red carpet show on E! and did more chatting. I had printed out Oscar ballots and bingo cards and I made espresso martinis. They are so simple, just one part each of espresso, vanilla vodka, and Kahlua. Delish! We decided to get sushi this year rather than spend time making movie themed food and I wholeheartedly endorse that decision. No time in the kitchen away from the show.
As for the show itself, highlights for me were the opening number with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Conan O’Brien emerging from Demi Moore’s back like in the movie The Substance, Zoe Saldana’s emotional speech, the costume design category presentation, and Ben Stiller’s production design category skit.
I wasn’t surprised by any of the winners. Anora wasn’t my favorite film but I expected it to win big and it did. I’m glad Wicked got some wins and, while I was disappointed that A Complete Unknown didn’t win any awards, I’m still really glad I saw the film. I still want to see I’m Still Here and Sing Sing but I won’t be making the effort for any of the other nominees at this point.
And that’s my weekend recap. I know the Oscars aren’t for everyone but, as Hannah always says, it’s the best non-holiday holiday of the whole year!
It sounds like a stellar weekend! A well loved friend, a daughter, and the Oscars – sounds like a movie title! Let’s set our intention to have a good week, no matter what!
Thank you for helping me experience The Oscars vicariously with you! For me, your post-Oscar post is the best! XO
I’m not much of a (current) movie or Oscar person, so thanks for providing me with just the right amount of Oscar news! I was intrigued by Flow and think I’ll try to watch it tonight.
Fletch watched but I did not. I don’t think he was all that impressed with the show, but I may be wrong. When I asked him mid-way through who had won, he said he wasn’t really paying attention! LOL I still want to see Conclave and A Complete Unknown, but I will wait till I can stream them.
If you didn’t see Flow, we LOVED it, and Rudi now cites it as one of the best movies he’s ever seen.
I watched some of it (just until it was time for bed) and thought Conan was a good host. Loved the bit with Adam Sandler, too. I haven’t seen any of the movies that were nominated, so I didn’t have strong feelings about any of the winners. I was mostly watching for the dresses!
Tom and I were just laughing about how “into” the Oscars we were for our ENTIRE married life . . . until the pandemic happened and we just gave it up. And don’t miss it at all. This year, we only saw Wicked and Conclave. There are a few other movies we’ll watch, but most of them . . . I’m just not all that interested. I’m glad you enjoyed the “holiday” — and I enjoy hearing what you thought of the movies and the show itself. (We didn’t even watch that . . . ) (Times have SO changed.)
Hannah is right! I love that it’s a fun tradition for all of you!!
