Weekend Glimmers, May 2nd – 4th, 2025

Hello and welcome to the first Monday in May.

I’m feeling a little under the weather and also a little melancholy as today is my brother’s birthday and Douglas would have been 71 today if he hadn’t died in 1997.

Let’s look at some pretty photos from the weekend and see if that can cheer me up. And maybe you, too, if you need it.

I did some plant shopping. On Friday I got a lavender plant, phlox, and a new hellebore. I also went plant shopping with Dale on Sunday and got, but did not photograph, a new hydrangea, rudbeckia, more lavender, and salvia for a new island bed we have out front.

I spent some time in my studio. It sounds pretentious to call it that but it’s not an office and it’s not a craft room so here we are. It’s a bright and cheerful space and George usually hangs out with me when I’m in there. In the cooler weather he would curl up in the chair by my desk but now that it’s warmer he tends to stretch out on top of that table and keep a watchful eye over me.

I did some weeding. Many years ago, young and foolish gardener me planted mint in an area where I am now trying to establish phlox. Boy do I regret that day! It’s resilient and spreads like wildfire and it seems like the more I remove there more there is. On the bright side, while I was out there I picked a little bouquet of violets that were sprouting in my grass.

How was your weekend?

  1. I hope you feel better, Carole. Getting through the days we wish were celebrations rather than remembrances are tough. Love to see what you are planting this year. Ah, yes, mint. It’s almost as bad as kudzu, just more pleasant! Have a happy week. We won’t get this time back, so let’s make the most of it.

  2. Your studio looks so bright and inviting! (especially with sweet George lounging there!) Good luck with the mint eradication! I will be holding you close in my thoughts today … I hope you are feeling better soon! XO

  3. Ah yes, mint! It does spread like wildfire. Your new plant additions are lovely. I hope you feel better as the day goes on. Take care.

  4. I hope you are feeling better and remembering your brother with love and good memories. Be sure and smell your lavender; that always makes me feel better. And when life gives you mint, make mint tea (by the gallon)!

  5. Sending all my love to you today, Carole. XO
And your studio is SUCH a studio . . . and why do have such hangups over calling our studios studios??? I love your violet bouquet, and my heart goes out to you re: That Mint. (Said the gardener who still finds random lemon balm – a member of the mint family – showing up in garden beds and it was ONLY IN A CONTAINER.)

  6. I hope good memories of your brother help ease the sadness!

Your studio is so bright & welcoming! (Mine needs a paint job.)

That bouquet of violets is so pretty! I love it when I spot big patches of it. It’s Wisconsin’s state flower.

  7. Sending a hug your way today Carole. I’ve been fighting chives for as long as I’ve lived in this house ! I swear they disappear and then return with a vengeance.

  8. I went to a plant sale over the weekend too. I am coming up on some hard, grief days and I find digging in the dirt is a great way to soothe my soul. Be gentle Carole
