We kicked off summer in our town last night with the annual Dale and the…
Weekend Glimmers, May 9th-11th, 2025
I have 3 photos from my weekend to share with you.
I went to Jackie’s soccer game and took my sock knitting with me. The day was very bright and sunny but the breeze was chilly. You just never know what the weather is going to be like on the soccer field in the spring.
I planted dahlias and zinnia seeds. Each of those 3 raised beds in the front have 8 dahlia tubers in them, their variety is identified by those little stakes you see in the dirt. Every tuber had already sprouted so I am hopeful for a 100% return on this investment. The bed furthest away is planted with 4 rows of zinnia seeds. Fingers crossed that everything comes poking up through the dirt soon.
Dale planted what I am now calling “Kousa Island” (because that’s our Kousa Dogwood anchoring the left edge of it) with a hydrangea, some lavender, some salvia, and some rudbeckia. This is my first macrophylla (big leaf) hydrangea as my others are all panicle. I chose to go with a macrophylla this time because I really want blue flowers. I have tested my soil and it was too alkaline so I have added organic soil acidifier and I’m hoping for good results. The thing I love so far about these plants is that I can see the from my kitchen sink window, my living room windows, and one window in my bedroom. The other flower beds I have are all foundation plantings so this is a real treat.
In between all of this I managed to hang out, do some reading, celebrate Mother’s Day with Hannah, Jess, and Jackie with our first dinner under the pergola of the season, and make a delicious dinner of shrimp and orzo. It was a very satisfying weekend and I hope yours was, too.

Your Kousa Island will be so beautiful as the plants begin to grow. And Wow! You managed to get all the tubers planted AND Zinnia seeds. Go You! Sounds like a lovely weekend with a good mix of things. Mine was so nice as well.
Zinnias and dalias are always nice to look at, but I think Kousa island will be wonderful to see from your kitchen sink. And good job matching your nail color to your knitting!
Your garden beds are all so lovely, especially Kousa Island! I have my fingers crossed for you all your planting to be highly successful! Happy Monday! XO
Sounds like a great weekend. Will be looking for updates on Kousa Island as things progress.
Ooooh, I am excited to see your flowers coming up! And I love your sock yarn!
I love all the dahlia planting going on all over the internet right now!! I love the beds/plantings that I can see from inside the house, and I’m glad you have some, too!
