Three On Thursday

Some random stuff this week . . .

  1. We still have lots of snow. Big piles on the corners. No grass to be seen. Chunks of ice in parking lots. And yet. The forecast is for the upper 50s and low 60s for Sunday until the middle of next week. Could there be melting heading our way? I definitely hope so.
  2. The dry cold weather has really impacted my hands this season. Maybe because it’s been colder than usual or maybe because, ahem, I’m older. No amount of hand cream seems to make it better for long. If you’ve got a product you use that works, tell me what it is.
  3. The Oscars are coming and so far we’ve seen five of the Best Picture nominated movies: Sinners, One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Hamnet. I’m usually a completist when it comes to this but I’m not so sure I will be this year. I do still want to see Sentimental Value, F1, and Train Dreams, though. And then I think, well, if I’ve seen eight out of ten then I might as well watch the other two (Bugonia and The Secret Agent) so I can evaluate them all.

Have a great day!

  1. Our snow is almost gone, but walking to the mailbox this morning I noticed more still in my neighbor’s yard. But it is warming – I walked down to the mailbox without a coat!! We watched Train Dreams some months back – it is excellent! My hands have been pretty bad this year too. I have started using rubber gloves for dishes and that is helping. So far, Gold Bond lotions seem to have the staying power – use that lotion on my feet as well as my hands.

  2. My hands take a beating in cold weather, even cracking. I’ve tried everything people tell me is ‘the best’. Meh. But, I just started using O’Keefe’s Working Hands that comes in a very green tube. It’s spendy, so I usually use it generously at night and then when I won’t be plunging my hands in and out of water. Even used a little sparingly, it has really improved my hands tremendously.

I have a friend who participates in an Oscar party every year and she said there wasn’t one Best Film movie she didn’t think wasnt worth seeing. And she feels they made the number of films in that category too big. So, maybe finish?

  3. Our snow is gone (but we have some in the forecast later next week… after the spate of 70 degree days… seems not right, but there you have it!) My hands (skin!!) have been so dry this year I have moved to using Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream… it is quite a bit thicker than a lotion, and it seems to have helped this winter.

  4. It is spring down here, with temps in the 70’s, which is fabulous, but also portends for a long, very sweltering summer when we start this early. I am a retired nurse who still washes her hands all day long. It’s a habit, but a good habit. What type of cream you use depends on what your problem is. If it is dry, cracked skin that cannot be moisturized, then use this – Atrac-Tain Moisturizing Cream by Coloplast. You can get it on Amazon. It is a medical product that was originally used for wound care, but it is the GOAT for hand cream. If I use it at bedtime, my hands are fabulous in the morning. The only problem I have with it is that if I use it too often, my hands get so soft that they are more prone to injury, if that makes sense. It is great for elbows, knees, hands, you name it. It exfoliates and moisturizes simultaneously. You’re welcome!

  5. I am convinced that my hands feel/look much better after two years of using Vanicreme during the day and Nivea (the original German formula; NOT the “newer” formulation found in most stores) at night. Good luck. Nothing “sexy” or collagen-enhanced . . . just good old stuff that works. You won’t believe how fast the snow will melt (relatively) once the temperatures hit 50+.

  6. I second the recommendation of the Coloplast product. The one I’ve been using is Sween, given to me by the radiology department to care for my skin during radiation tx. You’ll probably have to order it online.

I hope the melting of your snow is gentle to avoid flooding issues.

  7. Another vote for Atrac-Tain. My parents both had radiation and chemo and I used this for their skin care during that time. It worked so well on my hands just from applying it for my parents that I started using it for myself and have continued for years.

  8. We have those awful dirty gray snow piles everywhere, but they’re disappearing pretty quick!

I’m looking forward to the Oscars, but I know I won’t see all the Best Picture noms — timing just isn’t working this year.

We bought a room humidifier this year & it’s helped a lot — because in addition to my hands, my nose always dries out in the cold dry weather, and it can be SO painful. There used to be an Aprilaire in our house years ago & I’m considering having it installed again. (I’m also taking notes from all the great comments here about hand moisturizers!)
