Read With Us: The Good People Promo Post

It’s my turn at bat today to convince you to read the next Read With Us selection, Good People by Patmeena Sabit. Spoiler alert: I read it back in February and gave it 4 stars.

The plot itself is an interesting approach as Sabit tells the story of the Sharaf family exclusively through interviews and statements from family, friends and reporters. In other words, we never hear directly from any of the individuals actually involved in the . . . I’ll use the word tragedy . . . but want to be mindful about not giving anything away. This approach forces the reader to piece together what has happened, which results in a pretty compelling and thought-provoking read.

The book is rather buzzy and has gotten a lot of press coverage. It’s been called the year’s first great novel and the reviews have been very positive. There are several YouTube interviews with the author, but if you’re going to check out only one then I recommend Brett’s Book Stack. If you haven’t read the book yet just be mindful that there are spoilers at the end of the interview.

Our discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9th at 7pm EST. Bonny and Kym and I hope you will join us!

  1. I’m gonna say . . . it’s the most page-turning choice we’ve ever made for Read With Us! I think there will be much to discuss — from the family dynamics and social issues to the narrative style. I can’t wait!
