Weekending, May 1st – 3rd, 2026

The first weekend in May was full of jolts of joy, allow me to show you some photographic evidence.

We had Friday Night Snacks at home. This has been our Friday ritual for many, many years. A martini for me, a beer for Dale, snacks, music, and conversation about our week or whatever else is on our minds. It’s something I truly look forward to and it’s a great way to start the weekend.

On Saturday, I spent some time in the yard.

I got the dahlias out of storage and discovered many, many (and clearly not pictured) were mush. This has never happened before and I think it’s too cold to keep them in the basement all winter now that we don’t have a furnace down there anymore providing some radiant heat. I am so grateful to have at least one of each of the eighteen varieties I stored. I am also really glad I don’t sell these for a profit as I’d be in deep shit if I did.

The flowering quince is spectacular this year, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it this loaded with buds. It’s in an awkward spot on the edge of the front garden bed (I didn’t plant it obvs) but I loathe the idea of moving it so it shall stay where it is. It was loaded with big, fat bumblebees – I think I counted 8 just from where I was standing.

The bumblebees were also taking full advantage of the pollen on the hellebores. I love to see them nestling into the center of the flowers and collecting all of that food.

My hellebores are abundant enough this year that I decided I had enough to pick and bring inside. They are so quietly elegant.

On Sunday we ventured out for a bit, a rare occurrence these days as I tend to lean towards staying home on Sundays. But Dale wanted to check out the new World Market (because of the international candy section, honestly) and I readily agreed. We had a late lunch at Sullivan’s Castle Island. I’ve only ever been to the Boston location and I’ve only ever had hot dogs but we splurged on the first lobster rolls of the season and they were delicious!

And just like that, it’s Monday. I hope your weekend was a satisfying one.

  1. What a lovely weekend! So sorry about some of your dahlia bulbs – what a shame. Your flowering quince is gorgeous! We had one once, but somehow it disappeared…and I keep saying I want hellebores.. Lobster!!!

  2. Sounds like a good weekend except for the dahlia episode. Such a bummer. May the hardy holdouts be spectacular.

  3. I can always count on you to tease me with those lobster rolls! Looks like you are having a wonderful spring, except for the dahlia episode. Live and learn, as always. I’m glad all varieties will be represented for you this year.

  4. I love how much good food and drink is often included in your weekends! I would love a lobster roll but that’s not really a thing here in central NJ. I’m sorry about your dahlia bulbs, but I hope the remaining ones are hardy enough to provide you with lovely flowers this year.

  5. What a pretty martini glass! Glad you had a great weekend. I spent a lot of mine shuttling to cat-sitting for my kids!

  6. Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear about the dahlias. Keeping my fingers crossed that what you have that’s okay does spectacularly! Looks like it was a delicious weekend. I am now craving a lobster roll!

  7. The hellebores are just beautiful. I don’t grow those so I enjoy seeing yours. I know Kym also sings their praises. I love to cut flowers from the yard and bring them indoors. Rats to those dahlia bulbs. It’s wonderful to read about your nice weekend. You do know how to enjoy life and I admire that.

  8. Sorry to hear about your dahlias, but very happy that you didn’t lose them all! We planted hellebores last year and they took FOREVER to make an appearance this year (all but one) — we’re a long way from flowers! I keep thinking/hoping that all the energy is being spent underground as they settle in.
