B is for Breakfast

One of my goals for this year is to eat better. I’d like to lose weight and I’d like to exercise more but the bottom line is I need to eat better. And the more I read about eating better the more I read that people who do eat better (how many times can I use that phrase in the first paragraph of this post?) eat breakfast. Every day.

Now, I love breakfast. I love it on Saturday and Sunday mornings and I love it to consist of eggs and pancakes and bacon and sausage and hash browns and toast and baked beans. Yes indeed all of that at once, please. Howsomever, I don’t think that’s what the people who advocate eating better and eating breakfast actually have in mind. Something tells me if I ate that every morning I probably wouldn’t lose any weigh. Heh.

Nevertheless, I’m here to tell you that I have eaten breakfast every morning for the past 27 days. I haven’t eaten breakfast that many days in a row since the 6th grade, I think. But I’m doing it. And I like it.

Some mornings I have cereal with banana along with wheat toast and peanut butter.

And some mornings I have a one egg omelet with a low cal English muffin.

And other mornings I have oatmeal with almonds and craisins and that piece of wheat toast with peanut butter again.

Variety is the spice of breakfast, apparently. So, there you have it. B is for Breakfast. Every morning. I think I’m eating better, kids.

  1. Yum! Your breakfasts look great. I generally eat a low-fat English with either an egg or pb. And then a fiber one bar aroune 10:00/10:30.

  2. Mmmm. My fave is the oxymoron breakfast. Oatmeal and bacon. In reality, I have a Boost shake on the way to work, then eat instant cream of wheat a short while after. Too many convenience foods, not enough fresh~that’s what I’m working to change.

  3. Breakfast… a noun with whom I have very little connection (heh heh)
I am proud of you for honoring who you are. You are beautiful right this very moment. don’t forget that.

  4. I’ve been trying to eat breakfast every morning too. I eat a yogurt and sometimes one of those little packets of cream of wheat.

  5. I love breakfast and yours looks mighty delicious. Have you tried mixing a scoop (a tbs or 2) of peanut butter into your oatmeal? It’s yummy and so good for you.

  6. That’s one of the main things I took away from my time with the nutritionist. That and the importance of getting enough sleep.

  7. I’ve heard you have to do something 21 times for it to become a habit. So, looks like you’ve got yourself a great habit there. Good for you and your healthy breakfasts. I really think eating a good breakfast every morning will help you to both lose weight (less famished binging later in the day) and exercise more (lots of energy to get you going)!

  8. Nice B. My favorite breakfast is bagels with smoked fish, but my standard breakfast (i.e., what I eat when I’m not in NYC) is homemade granola with yogurt.

  9. Good for you! I eat breakfast, but I don’t like breakfast foods. (My favorite breakfast is leftover Chinese food.) I was struggling with that this morning. I ended up heating up a Smart Ones lasagna.

  10. That’s a great B. I’m a big believer in breakfast but I’m very boring. Oatmeal or a Chex are my usual. I’d probably be on track to lose a bit of weight if I didn’t drink Starbucks Chai with it. *Sigh*

  11. I’m trying to eat (or drink) breakfast, too. I’ve been putting Wyman’s wild frozen blueberries in my oatmeal…yummy! My favorite is a blueberry smoothie, with Dannon Light and Fit yogurt, a Promise Activ Super Shot (for cholesterol), blueberries, milk, and a bit of Splenda. Now that’s something I can stomach first thing in the morning!

  12. Mmmmm, I think it’s time for MY breakfast :^)
Yours look yummy to me! On Gracie days we usually have breakfast foods for lunch, I love breakfast foods!

  13. Yay for breakfast! It’s how I was raised, and somehow I just never drifted away…I’ve always been a breakfast eater. My usual breakfast is bran flakes + raisins (NEVER Raisin Bran!) and half a pot of coffee. 😀

  14. Eat better? I guess it’s all relative. Better than most, for sure. I like eggs and bacon on the weekend, but weekdays, it’s diet flakes and 2%. And water. LOTS of water.

  15. Congratulations! To eat breakfast for 27 days running is really good!!!! It’s a habit now! You do know that eating breakfast is one of the HARDEST things for people to do for themselves. I am really proud of you! I think I will try and follow your lead – I need to eat breakfast, too…but can’t seem to get it together!

  16. That’s way too much thinking for me first thing in the morning. For every weekday for years now (unless the power was out), I’ve eaten a bowl of oatmeal (Quaker Old-Fashioned, cooked in a pot), with some low-fat milk. No sugar. No cinnamon. No fruit–just oatmeal and milk. And that’s usually breakfast on at least one weekend day, too. Sundays, though? That might be pancakes or waffles. Or maybe egg on toast. Or coffee cake, if I went to the effort to make some the day before.

And yes, they do say it takes 28 days to make a habit, so–good for you!!

  17. I’ve had a hard time eating breakfast since I retired – somehow getting up an hour later bypasses my “breakfast hunger” time. But I’m trying to make myself eat anyway, and get into the new routine. I totally agree with Margene – adding peanut butter to oatmeal rocks! Not only tasty, but a great way to add protein and some good fat to help keep you satisfied. My breakfast is usually either eggs or plain yogurt with fruit, but I often do oatmeal on the weekend.

  18. though i don’t usually eat breakfast til lunchtime, i love all those breakfast foods you pictured (especially peanut butter!) . . .you can graze a little and have lots of different flavors in one meal, which is so satisfying.

  19. I have to eat breakfast or I can’t get through the morning…my blood sugar definitely needs a boost the minute I wake up. Two other ideas for you to try are steel cut oats (Irish oatmeal) and Greek yogurt. The oatmeal is a little chewy and very filling; the yogurt is my fave in the summer, with some honey, fruit or homemade granola mixed in.

  20. Yes! I’m a devoted breakfast eater…every day. Mostly right now, it’s whole wheat English muffins with peanut butter and no-sugar jam and cranberry juice.
Oh. And coffee – no more cream – as I’d like to see some of this weight come off, too!

I’m glad you’re liking breakfast every day. It’s really such a comfort to our souls!
    (((hugs)))

  21. They all look delicious Carole! I’m a breakfast girl myself. I’m cranky until I eat. One of my favorites is whole grain waffles (Go Lean’s are good) with low sugar apricot preserves. Yummy!

  22. Mmmmmm… some of my favorites! I love toast with peanut butter & banana but I usually have oatmeal with grated ginger and pear. Breakfast is my favorite meal 🙂

  23. I am so proud of you for taking this step, Carole. Taking better care of yourself is so important in so many ways.

Btw, do you think a glass of water counts as breakfast? ;^)

  24. Oh, that’s just fabulous!! Twenty-seven days? Terrific!! (Mmmm, I love peanut butter toast. When I get smart like you, I’ll be having it with my breakfast a couple times a week, too.)

  25. I’ve never been a big fan of breakfast – I remember endless fights with my mother as she tried desperately to get some food in me before I wandered off to school. I always seem to be vaguely nauseated for the first couple of hours after I wake up, and forcing myself to eat is such a chore. I do it, mostly because I know that if I don’t I’ll be a trembling mess long before lunchtime, but I’m not a fan.

‘Course, if I had breakfasts like yours, it might be a bit easier…especially that omelet. Yum.

  26. I honestly don’t know how people manage without breakfast, and yet it’s something I hear all the time. How are non-breakfasting people not comatose at their desks by 10:30 am? 😉

I like that you are making the time to have proper hot breakfasts, too. 🙂 During the week mine is just cereal, or maybe yogurt.

  27. Breakfast at our house this morning was a bit of leftover cold grilled ginger-soy salmon and steamed broccoli. My indulgence was to add a cup of cocoa made with no sugar, just milk and Scharffenberger natural process unsweetened cocoa. DH is seriously low-carb and DD is non-gluten, so we eat a lot of “suppers” for breakfast. I miss waffles!

    Good luck with your goals.

  28. Your diet is WAY better than mine! Looks yummy. Good for you for eating breakfast. I have a difficult time with it as well, but I suppose it’s a necessary evil. Supposedly if you eat a good breakfast, you want eat as much through the day, Supposedly. The jury’s still out on that one though 😉

  29. I know that’s true, but I can’t stand to even look at food first thing in the morning. Give me 3 hours though and boy then I can eat.

  30. One of my favorites is plain nonfat yogurt with about a teaspoon of real maple syrup, some blackberries (fresh or no-sugar-frozen) and a smallish sprinkling of granola. YUM. Now I’m hungry.

  31. I usually read your blog while eating my breakfast. 🙂 Naturally, today I was running late and missed my computer time, but not my breakfast – ate it while getting ready for work. I have oatmeal (old fashioned) cooked in the micro, with fat-free cottage cheese added to it (for protein) and a splash of soymilk and a few Splenda. Every morning except Sunday, when we have whole wheat pancakes with sugar-free maple syrup. If I don’t eat breakfast, I’m ready to pass out by 8:00. A combination of low blood sugar and not eating after 6pm, I think.

I love breakfast foods too, and I like a big buffet when we’re on vacation.

  32. congrats! usually i can’t wrap my stomach around breakfast unless i’ve been up 2 or more hours – which puts me at work where i can’t really eat breakfast anyway (and it’s only an hour or so til lunch, so why bother). yours look very yummy AND healthy. keep it up!

  33. mmmm…eggs benedict is my personal favorite. *really* bad for you but oh so good! ;o)

I usually can’t face breakfast until lunchtime, though. I have to talk myself into it. I hope your plan is working! Good luck!

  34. I can’t really imagine NOT eating breakfast. Maybe because I’m hungry ALL THE TIME! But those breakfasts look good.
