Three On Thursday

I think we can all agree that life during a pandemic sucks ass. We have all collectively missed out on so much . . . being with family members and friends, traveling, dining out, and more. But today I’m here to praise 3 things that came about because of the pandemic that I hope are here to stay.

  1. Curbside pick up. Whether it’s groceries or take out, I’m all in for sitting in the car and having whatever I’ve purchased brought right over to me.
  2. Cocktails to go. The other night we ordered Mexican food and Dale surprised me by bringing home a big ole margarita in a to-go cup. I dumped out all the ice, added more tequila, poured it into my own glass and enjoyed the hell out of it. Also along this line . . . booze delivery. Send that Booze Mobile right to my door, please.
  3. Outdoor dining. I know that for many of you this is probably not something new but my little town, for reasons I’ve never known or understood, did not allow outdoor dining. Last spring when restaurants were struggling we relaxed the rules on this and now it looks like it will become a permanent thing. I love dining al fresco, even if the view isn’t anything other than the road!

Are there things about this time that you hope will stick around?

  1. Grocery pickup is a part of my life that I love. Sure is easier and more efficient than traipsing all over the store.

  2. Social distancing! I need personal space and being crowded by some thoughtless oaf when there is no reason annoys the heck out of me. I don’t need 6’, but if I can accidentally bump you, back off. I’ve also noticed an increased level of courtesy and awareness instead of rudely living in your own bubble while you’re in public. People seem to have learned they don’t need to yammer about their personal business constantly on their phone in public. Yahoo!

  3. I hope that courtesy and friendliness will stick around. Sure, there are still rude people, but I’ve noticed that almost everyone waves and says hello when I’m taking my walk. This happens in NJ, MD, if people are also walking, or even if they are in a car. This rarely happened in the before times, but it’s nice now!

  4. There are definitely some silver linings going on . . . Personally, I hope curbside everything sticks around! And while I’m definitely tired of Zoom, I’m hoping that online “participation” options continue. I’ve enjoyed lectures, workshops, and classes (and book group discussions!) that I’d never have been able to attend . . . all thanks to Zoom options. 🙂

  5. Curbside pickup for the win! Although it was around in my city prior to the pandemic, I didn’t start using it until the pandemic hit.

  6. I have found that I love working from home. I enjoy not having to schlep all my stuff to and from the office and being able to leave to go pick my daughter up at school when it ends (instead of rushing home at 5 to get my car and pick her up from the after-school program she didn’t like having to stay for). And to be quite honest, I am 100% fine with never having to be in large crowds again if I can help it!

  7. I haven’t used curbside as much as others. I was loving the senior shopping hours but those seem to be going away. I have found that I love being home.

  8. I’m another one who loves working from home and…from what I hear/understand that will remain the mode in my company. WooHoo!! I have not done curbside pick up. I just prefer to pick out my own produce (which is the bulk of our shopping anyway). I do love the friendliness of folks (less rudness), less traffic on the road and not so many crowds.

  9. I have not used curbside either and even though I do not like wearing a mask much I LOVE that there have been no head colds, flu illnesses, stomach bugs etc. through all of this. I know we’ll never be a masked society but man they do work!

  10. I’m an in-my-home childcare provider for first responders and members of the medical community, therefore my day to day changed very little after the first week, or so, as we figured out mandates. That said, vet visits where they come get the dogs out of the car, weekly parking lot chats with my friend that used to occur in a crowded restaurant, and getting to watch movies in the comfort of my own home rank up there with the things that I’m looking forward to keeping in my life. Family zoom game nights with the far flung grown kids don’t happen as often as I’d like, but I’ll take them any time I can get them!

  11. Yes to all of that!! Kate has informed that Cocktails-To-Go is a thing at airports now, too. (For future reference.)

  12. I’m a huge fan of curbside pickup too! From restaurants to groceries to JoAnn Fabric to Home Depot to ACE Hardware. I’ve used a lot of them!

  13. I wish more stores and restaurants around here offered curbside.

And as much as Zoom feels impersonal, I’ve been able to attend seminars and workshops from all around the country! Collaborating with teachers from across the country is an opportunity I never would have had.

  14. I do use curbside pickup at the grocery store and Target (and they have a frozen snack that I can only get there and it recently got added as a pickup option). I plan to go grocery shopping tomorrow just to see if they stopped carrying something that hasn’t been a pickup at the grocery store. I have stomach issues and this brand is either mail order or it was at my local grocery. If it stays I will continue to use it as I tend to throw things in the cart while walking around that I would if I ordered.

I do like going to the vet and have them come get the cats. I wish that would stay around. It still is so far so a book may come with me to the Vet tomorrow.

  15. Grocery deliver is the best! (as is the return of outdoor dining season! WOO!) And YES to to-go cocktails! BEST THING EVER!

  16. Aah the jar store delivery aka liquor store. I grew up in NJ and I’ll never forget when we had company unexpected my Dad would go upstairs to the bedroom phone and make a call that wen something like this. Hi Hank it’s Bert the garage door is open and I need a quickdelivery of ….. we have guests. 20 minutes or less it was done the bill was on the tab. And tehn I moved to UT. Still running to state operated stores in not so convenient locations and showing my ID at the register. My white hair isn’t enough nor are my 54 yrs in UT. But oh yes I do remember and still would love delivery from these shops. Enjoy

  17. I love love love grocery delivery! Because at work my mission is to protect wages and sick leave for essential workers, I am doubly grateful for the delivery drivers and always add a good tip to my order. I also love Microsoft Teams for video meetings and chats. Because a lot of my colleagues are spread across the country, pre-pandemic we communicated by email and conference call. The team I supervise is in Utah and I’m in Washington DC! Now I get to see their faces every day. I also love that I can catch up with my early morning coffee buddy every day, but I think he calls me more to see my kitty Loki than to talk to me!

  18. I love all 3 of these and hope they are here to stay-curbside pickup?! uh yea! Outdoor dining especially in Roswell is practically a year round thing and I’ve always loved eating outside.
