A Room Of My Own

I never mentioned it on the blog but last May my 25 year old stepson Luke moved out. His room sat empty over the summer as we contemplated how to best use this new space. Last month we came up with a plan that made me very, very happy. The first part of the plan was to move Hannah into Luke’s old room. This room has more privacy, more space, and a closet, so Hannah quickly agreed. Dale did lots of work and the room was finally painted (blue, brown and lime green) and Hannah took over the space. It’s nice but that’s not what made me very, very happy.

What made me very very happy was our plan for Hannah’s old room. It has become MY studio. (We first called it a “craft room” but I told Dale I thought studio sounded way more sophisticated and that’s what it’s now called.)

Once again, Dale did lots of work.

Look how cheerful he is!

Bye bye, green.

Hellooooooo, red.

I like this photo because I think the shadows are cool but also because it shows the two new colors, red and taupe, along with the old green paint.

Are you ready for the finished pictures? I hope so because here they are!

We picked out this kitchen island piece from Ikea. It was a bitch to put together, but Dale suffered through it and got it done.

This bureau holds all my fabric.

That’s my grandmother’s old sewing machine table with my machine on top. And a new Ott lite, too.

I have to show you the trompe l’oeuil fireplace that we had painted years ago. It’s my favorite feature of the room. The basket of handspun is a nice feature, too.

I think we’ve created an excellent space for all sorts of creative pursuits. A studio of my own. It’s just what I’ve always wanted.

  1. Isn’t that wonderful!!! I have an empty upstairs room that I’ve moved some stuff into, and I like to think if it as my studio, but is a far cry from this. Love that “fireplace”!

  2. Great room! My mother’s first place was a basement apartment in Boston. Being an artist she too painted a fireplace to cheer her space up. Is there a wheel out of view in that room?

  3. It looks terrific! I like the “studio” name, too. My room has been “the sewing room” for a long time, but I’ve been trying to change it to studio. My daughter insists on still calling it by its old name. 🙂

  4. What an amazing space for you to work in. Love the red…love the fire place, love everything about it! Have fun…it’s a fabulous room.

  5. terribly exciting! what a wonderful space to call your own 😉 the red in your room is like your red background on your blog! how fitting 🙂

  6. I love it! And “studio” is the right word for it. IT’s what I call my room too. Absent a decent idea for a post today – I may just show mine!!

  7. I don’t know what’s more awesome (awesomer? Heehee, no.) your new studio or your husband.

I’m so calling my smooshed little corner (where my spinning wheel is shoved) of my husband’s office my studio from now on. It won’t be red and it’s certainly not big enough for an ikea table, but damn, it’s mine…Right?

  8. Oh WOW…you’re so lucky! Your room is beautiful, and Dale does look so happy while painting, or maybe it was the fumes?
If I could just get Julia off to college I’ll have a “larger” room, as it is now mine is basically a closet (very small room). I wish one chest of drawers would hold all my fabric…yes, I’m a fiber/fabric/yarn pig!

  9. That’s wonderful! And “studio” is just right. Although we practice a craft, its really more sophisticated to think of it as a form of art, dontcha think?

  10. How wonderful! I love the color choices and the way cool fireplace looks (though I do hope you have real heat to keep your tootsies warm while creating).

  11. Studio does have areally nice sound. I am so jealous. I think that everyone in my house has come to the conclusion that a fiber studio is necessary but it’s not likely to happen anytime soon.

  12. I am GREEN with envy! It’s a gorgeous space and you will, I am confidant, perform miracles of creation and genius there! Enjoy it Carole. You deserve it!

  13. Yay for you Carole! Your studio looks great. That’s something I’ve always wanted – a place to store & to do all of my crafts…someday. 🙂

    Dale did a great job!

  14. Jell. Us.
I was just kvetching to my husband that I’m the only one in the house who doesn’t have my own space. I told him that in the next house we buy, hopefully within the year, we need to have a studio space for me so people will QUIT. MOVING. MY. THINGS.
