On Spinning

When I was at SPA a couple of weeks ago I met Kelly. She is a friend of Julia’s and now, by extension and familiarity, a friend of mine. And she offered up one of my favorite quotes of the weekend.

You see, someone watching me spinning said, “What are you going to make with that?” (They meant what was I going to knit with the yarn I was spinning.) And I said, “I dunno.” (I’m a wonder with words, aren’t I?) It was then that Kelly said to me, “just say what I always say: I made yarn. Isn’t that enough?”

I love it. Because, while I do love knitting with my handspun, sometimes it’s just enough to have made yarn. Of course, you have to say it with a bit of a snarky attitude to get the right effect. I’m pretty good at the snark thing, you know. And so . . .

I made singles.

And I made barber-poley plied yarn.

And I made silk blend yarn.

I made yarn. Isn’t that enough?

  1. YES. I love your singles – I always ply my yarn, but I admire others who can spin such even, healthy singles that can be left as they are. One day…

  2. It sure is. Especially that last one. (You knew I’d drool over that last one, didn’t you?)

  3. Oh it is definitely enough! They are all gorgeous – makes me want to pull out the wheel right now! My kids don’t really need to get to school this morning do they?

  4. Yes, it is enough…but it could be more, too.

Gorgeous and they’d look fabulous made up into something, anything…if you choose.

  5. They’re gorgeous…..I’d say they are worthy of the work of art stash status, and then if you ever decided to knit them they’d be beautiful too. There are skeins though that are sometimes just so pretty to look at. Nice work!

  6. It certainly is more than enough – gorgeous! And if you ever want to unload that Tears of Fire…

  7. The yarn is beautiful! I’m drawn to the first skein. I was sitting next to Julie (Noolie) at SPA and asked her the same thing. Her (snarky) reply was: “Yarn!”

  8. Yarn is enough. If you find something you want to knit or crochet with it later, that’s just a bonus!

I do like those Cross Patch colors.

  9. Beautifully spun! Stash them away until the day they will be beautifully knit.

  10. That is SO enough. You made gorgeous yarn. Don’t you love Kelly? She has converted another to the ways of yarn making as of last nights spin group, our lovely hostess can now make yarn – hooray!

  11. Oh yes, that’s definitely enough. 🙂 It’s all beautiful! By the way, I’m taking my first spinning classes over the next two weeks. Soon I’ll be able to make yarn, too (hopefully!).

  12. I think it’s enough! But then that’s what I keep saying about the stuff I’ve spun!

  13. Of course it’s enough. It’s fabulous. I really like that first, blue and white yarn. Very pretty.

  14. Funny, I was asked what I was going to make with what I was spinning, and my answer was “Yarn”. I have since made a decision as to what to make with that particular yarn, but it IS enough to just make yarn; that’s an FO in my book 🙂

    Your yarn is beautiful!

    Your yarn is beautiful!

  16. Ooops, didn’t mean to post that twice, sorry.

p.s. I just read back through your comments and see that Brenda already told you about my answer 🙂

  17. Wow! How cool is that! you made YARN!
I wish I could make decent yarn. I make… er, stuff, stringy sort of mixedly spun (some over, some under, some just right) stuff. Still not useful for anything at all…. and not quite good enough to say “I made yarn”.
It’s TOTALLY enough to say “I made Yarn!”
P.S. Not only that, but you made PRETTY yarn!

  18. I can totally picture Kelly saying that! (PS – Your yarn is beautiful…) I’m thinking of finding a really nice, really large glass bowl for my living room and throwing all my 4 ounce skeins in there. Then I can make decorative yarn!

  19. Yes, and so many yarns look so much prettier just as yarn than knit into something. Artwork in themselves.

  20. Beautiful! I’m spinning silk right now that will never be knit. I’m thinking of skeining it and putting it in a shadow box.

  21. Not only did you make yarn, but you made yourself feel happy. And me, too, by posting that Tears of Fire picture. WOW is that pretty! 🙂

  22. i think it is. i love the singles. i love all of them but i especially love the singles.

  23. Yes it is! Plus anytime I spin with a plan it never works out it seems. Attempted sock yarns become bulkies, 2 ply worsted weights become lace, etc. I’m learning to just go with the flow 🙂

They are all beautiful – but I think the Cross Patch singles are my favorite.

  24. That’s a PERFECT answer. I love it!

And, of course, your spinning looks great, too….

  25. Absolutely! What a great comeback. When people ask me why I knit … I say “because I can”. I’m a bit snarky myself at times.

I’m coveting your handspun. I keep meaning to ask you. Do you have any recommendations for where I can purchase good fiber for a good price online?

  26. yeah, it is enough. even more so because it’s pretty yarn. the cross patch is my favorite.

  27. Nice comeback. Yes, I think yarn is an end-all product itself. All your yarn is beautiful but the silk blend is gorgeous and the barber-poley stuff makes me grin.
