A Wee Jackie Update

Hold on to your hats (and your hearts) because this is a school photo of Jackie. He’s 5 and he’s nearing the end of a wonderful year of preschool, if you can believe it. He goes three afternoons a week and I’ve been picking him up on Fridays since last September and that is just as fun as it sounds.

Sometimes we run errands or make special trips to the candy store or the library but usually we just come back to my house and hang out. The first order of business is a snack, of course. Grapes are a big hit, as is American cheese and Ritz crackers. Sometimes we have fun snacks (last week it was Drumsticks because I told him the previous week about walking to the corner store for a Nutty Buddy [locally made and no longer available] with my Nana when I was little and he wanted to try them) but generally speaking Jack is not a kid who loves ice cream.

We often play Mario Kart and he generally beats me. We sometimes play with Magna-Tiles and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if architecture is in his future because he loves to build houses and frequently asks what I’d like in my dream house. He’s a great little conversationalist, which is a big Julius trait, and he loves candy, which is another big Julius trait. When Dale gets home they do things together in the backyard. Jackie recently asked me why Grampa loves to be outside so much and I said it’s just who he is.

Next September he’ll be starting kindergarten and riding the big bus so he won’t need me to pick him up anymore. That just makes me cherish these last few weeks of pick ups all the more

  1. Bittersweet weeks here, I’m sure. How great that you and Dale can be such a regular part of his life. That will happen in new ways in the future, but I’m sure it will happen.

  2. I can’t believe he’s headed for kindergarten! I hope that even after he’s in school, you’ll find some opportunities for special time with him.

  3. I don’t know when this happened, but he is ready for kindergarten! Your Fridays together are special but maybe you can meet him at the bus stop and continue the snack and Mario Kart tradition.

  4. Isn’t it wonderful to have that special time with our littles. I pick up our kindergarten boy once a week for an afternoon play date and dinner. Our smaller person turns 3 today and he comes on Thursday morning for play and lunch. I am treasuring these times because they grow up so quickly.

  5. What the heck, Carole!! Who authorized this? haha. Goodness, he’s adorable. I know how special your time together is — nothing quite like it. My grandkids are closing in on the last day of school, too, and it’s just amazing how much they’ve grown (in so many ways)!

  6. How is this possible??? (I know I say the same thing to Vicki about Jun, Gin, Malina and Davy). How fortunate it is (for all of you) that Jackie is close by so that you can have time together – wonderful for you and Dale, but also wonderful that Jackie is collecting so many memories. Enjoy your time with him – he is looking so grown up!!!

  7. Awe, so cute. He’s getting so big and the time goes by so quickly. My great niece is 5 and goes to preschool 5 days a week getting out at 11:30 on Fridays. I’ve picked her up a few times and am going to plan one more this year as she’ll be in all day kindergarten in the fall. We also do fun things like the library or a used bookstore. It’s so fun.

  8. One of the most fun things about blogging/reading blogs for so long . . . is being able to watch other people’s children – and grandchildren – grow up right there on my computer. 🙂 I’m so glad you and Jackie have been able to share this special time!
