Summer Reading 2024 Recap

While summer isn’t actually over until September 22nd, I consider Summer Reading to draw to an end once Labor Day arrives. Here’s a quick and dirty recap of my summer reading, with more statistics than you probably care about!

I read 23 books equaling 7144 pages and 35 hours of audio.

I read 2 books that I rated 5 stars. I read 9 books that I rated 4 stars. I read 11 books that I rated 3 stars. And I read 1 book that I rated 2 stars.

Overall, I’d say that’s typical of my reading. Most books wind up being 3 stars but there are a fair amount of 4 stars along with the occasional dud and a few (if I’m lucky) exceptional ones.

Of course you can read all of my reviews on GoodReads, but to save you the effort I will tell you that the two 5 star books were Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout and Know My Name by Chanel Miller.

The arrival of fall will result in adjustments to my reading. Less time camping and more time at home on the couch. Less time outside and more time cozied up under a blanket. Less short and easy reads and more chewy books.

Cheers to a great summer of reading!

  1. What a fantastic summer of reading, Carole!! My summer reading joy was re-reading 3 books… Paul Auster’s 4 3 2 1, Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow, and E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. Summertime reading is the best part of summer!

I am ready for fall reading though! I started George Eliot’s Adam Bede and have queued up Rosamunde Pilcher’s September… both of which I have never read!

    1. Oh, I am beginning to read the classics that I have never read. I think there is a wealth of good literature that I have ignored. I hope you enjoy Adam Bede.

  2. You sure had a great summer of reading! I’m happy to say that I’ve been on a run of books that I have really enjoyed! Looking back at the list I keep, I read more during the summer than I thought (17 books) and there were only a few duds!!

  3. That’s a lot of summer reading! My reading this summer felt like it was about average, but now I’m finding it hard to settle on books. I’ve started and abandoned quite a few, and am just waiting for holds and some to be published. Here’s hoping for good fall reading for you!

  4. Thanks, Carole, I always enjoy all your posts, but certainly the book recommendations the most. I have found a lot of good books because of you.

  5. Just wanted you to know we just bought an Ooni and we love it! Tim was going to buy a less expensive brand but I remembered how much you love yours so we went for the Ooni! We’ve already cooked on it three nights and have made things other than pizza! We love it!

  6. Those are some impressive totals! I’ve always felt like summer is well suited to 3-star reads — things that are easy and don’t require too much thinking — so I’m not surprised that most of your reads fell in the middle. I can’t wait to see what you have lined up to read in the fall!
