Joining with Kat and friends today to update you on my knitting and reading this week.

I have made forward progress on the sock, having finished the leg, heel, and gusset. Now (hopefully) it’s just a matter of cruising along on the foot. I will say, the dark color is challenging when watching television.

I finished Margo’s Got Money Troubles and A Box Full of Darkness and they were both terrific vacation reads. I am now reading The Amateur, Chris Bohjalian’s new book which will be published on August 4th. It is so good. Compelling and fast paced with a narrator that is sarcastic and biting and damaged in all kinds of wonderful ways. I think it’s his best book since Midwives and that’s saying something.

What are you knitting and reading this week?

  1. Sock looks great, but I am very challenged to knit with dark yarns these days. One of the many vicissitudes of aging. Thanks so much for the recommendation for the Amateur! I agree, the Midwives was his best novel for me thus far.

  2. Your sock looks great despite the dark yarn presenting a challenge. I felt the same way about The Amateur! I was quite surprised that I was so enthralled by a book about golf and Mira is a great main character.

  3. I like those socks, Carole! But I hear you on dark yarn in the evening woes… sigh. I don’t think you have said what pattern you are using for them? Would you be so kind as to share it? XO

  4. I’m finishing up a baby Fish Hat (cute free pattern from yesteryear on Knitty) and just finished reading the latest Daniel Silva. His (many) earlier books in which his protagonist is an agent in Mossad (Israel’s CIA) were amazing and superb. But he seems to have lost his insider informant, and the recent books have been lame. This new one though, Ransome, is pretty good.

  5. Thanks for the recommendations. Midwives sounds right up my alley, and it’s available now on my kindle.

Currently reading Yesteryear. Just started, but I think I’ll like it.

  6. I can’t wait to read The Amatuer. I pre-ordered it months ago. I will have to look at Margo’s Got Money Troubles as I remember seeing it when it came out.

  7. Your socks look great Carole! I’ve heard good things about the latest book from Bohjalian.

  8. The sock is looking good! I miss the days when dark yarn wasn’t such a challenge, but I guess all of us reach a point where our eyes aren’t as good as they used to be.

  9. The socks are coming along well, Carole! I have a very nice little LED light beside my chair for night knitting. It really helps . . . I read Margo’s Got Money Troubles when it first came out, and I thought it was an entertaining read. Tom and I recently watched the TV version and really liked it.

  10. Forward progress on a sock is forward progress. I’d be knitting that dark color during daylight hours. I haven’t read a book by Bohjalian for quite some time. Back in the day, I used to check out his books on cassette tapes from the library. Technology for audiobooks is such an improvement. I’m happy to read your review of this book and be reminded of his work.
