This Is 61

Do you remember the 21st night of September?

Well, on the 21st night of September in 1965, I was born. I don’t remember that first one, but I sure do remember a lot of them since. The years of kids birthday parties and my mom carrying a giant birthday cake. The preteen sleepover parties. The college years and young mother years and divorced years and remarried years and stepmother years and library director years and so many more.

They’ve all brought me to this. 61.

I feel happy and content. Strong and resilient. Respected and appreciated.

Mostly, though, I feel grateful. Grateful for a life that is full of love, a husband who fills me with joy, kids and grandkids that I am proud of, a circle of friends that is beyond anything I ever pictured, and a job that is not only important but also fun and deeply satisfying.

I hope I get a lot more 21st nights of September.

  1. Happy Birthday, Carole! No matter how long it’s been since we were together I can still hear your laughter and the way you say my name. I love it and I love you.

  2. Happy birthday! What nice birthday thoughts!

“The bell was ringin’, oh, oh
    Our souls were singin’
Do you remember never a cloudy day? Yow”

  3. I’ve been thinking of you all day. Happy 61 and looking forward to wishing you Happy 91. Thanks for all that you bring to us.

  4. I may be late to wishing you a happy birthday on your blog-space, but . . . you know I was celebrating with you all day long in the virtual-space. Here’s to a great year for you, Carole! XO

  5. Happy belated Birthday. What a wonderfully rich life you have as well as good memories. I wish you many more September 21’s to come. Either you celebrate the last day of summer or the first day of fall. My granddaughter’s birthday is also the 21st. It’s a good day for a birthday.
