I Believe in Miracles

Our third annual living history this past Saturday was a big success. As always, Dale did a lot of work to pull this together. And, as always, we had fabulous friends and volunteers who helped us with everything. But there was one thing we had this year that we haven’t had before – blue sky!

blue_sky.jpg
Thank you all so much for your good thoughts, prayers and positive energy. It worked. Despite the forecast – which was for showers and clouds – the weather was perfect. I truly believe we owe that to the power of the knitbloggers!

If you had been a visitor on Saturday, here are a few things you would have seen:

soldiers.jpg
Soldiers drilling. These guys put on a fine demonstration for the spectators. They even taught some willing participants how to be a Civil War soldier.

friends_spinning.jpg
Me spinning. The wheel was a huge success. People had a lot of questions about it and I think I was able to teach them a bit. I plan to talk more about this tomorrow.

fashion_show.jpg
A fashion show. Hannah volunteered to speak about the various women’s clothing and she did a terrific job.

pot_roast.jpg
Campfire cooking. We ate a wonderful meal of pot roast, potatoes and carrots, along with chicken cooked on a spit.

sharon.jpg
Laughing and talking! Here is Blogless Sharon and she’s having a terrific time – can’t you tell?

tent_night.jpg
And at the end of the day we went to bed. Exhausted but satisfied. Our tent never felt so much like home.

Outdoor cooking is amazing. My DH does tons of it. We cook our Thanksgiving turkey outside!

That is just so cool. I grew up outside Valley Forge and remember going to re-enactment-type things there as a child. Yours looks better (because you were there and I’m not a kid anymore and have a grander appreciation for history!!!)

  28. Kit Said,

      April 30, 2007 @ 10:02 am

It looks absolutely lovely. But your tent is what caught my eye because for some reason it reminds me of the Buster Keaton movie called “The Battling Butlers”. In the beginning, he is forced to “rough it” by his father. So he goes out into the wilderness and his tent has an iron-wrought bed, a bath, all the comforts of home. Heh, silly, but I have odd mental associations.

It all looks fabulous. I was quite surprised at Saturday’s weather, and I thought of you. After Miss B’s soccer game (they got creamed, but at least they didn’t get wet), we went to the sheep-shearing festival in Waltham, another event that’s much more fun when it’s not raining.

Oh Carole!! I wish I had time to read all the comments. How wonderful that the weather was so beautiful for your weekend! I can’t wait to see more pictures tomorrow. The food – isn’t that always just the best food you ever tasted when you’re out there busy and talking to people and working and stuff? Is that Hannah standing with her back to the camera in the photo?

You look just beautiful in that picture with your spinning wheel. I wish I could have been there. :)

Beautiful photos – thank you for sharing! You’ve made me all nostalgic for wool blankets, hoopskirts, cooking over an open fire and sleeping under a canvas roof *sigh* (though I must say that I do *not* under any circumstances wax sentimental over attempting to use a port-o-potty with a hoopskirt)

Is knitting allowed? What type of needle is authentic? Does the yarn have to be consistent (i.e. no tencel)?
