The Race Is On

Picture me, on Friday, innocently reading blogs and leaving comments. You know, like I do every day. So, I’m reading and reading and I come to the latest post at Seed Stitch. And Cheryl, like Julia and Beth, is all excited about the release of Anne’s Wing of the Moth pattern. Cheryl says she wants to knit this pattern as a race to see who can finish it first. I, again innocently, leave a comment about how I’m planning on knitting this shawl but I need to finish Miriam’s Adamas shawl first. Count me in for the knitting but not for the race, says I. And do you know what she did? Here’s a hint.

Yup. She threw down the gauntlet. She called me out. Here’s what she said, exactly:

Oh no, you’re not getting out of this that easily! You’re in, consider yourself raced.

Ahem. I am not one to back down from a challenge. Then again, I have my rules. And one of my rules is only one lace project on the needles at a time. The race is on but the race is to finish Adamas before I start Wing of the Moth. Here’s Adamas in her current state.

I have 5 more repeats of the main pattern before I switch to the edging. How long do you think this is going to take me to finish knitting? Leave your guess in the comments by Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11:00 pm EST and you’lll be entered into a drawing for this skein of lace weight yarn – so you can make your very own Wing of the Moth Shawl.

Merino Lace, made in Italy for Skacel Collection. 1375 yds.

You don’t have to be right about when I’ll finish to win. Anyone who guesses in the comments will be entered and I’ll randomly select a name. This is an excellent chance to de-lurk, all you lurkers. Just sayin.

The race (and the contest!) is on!

  1. I think you like the idea of the challenge, so I’m guessing you hurry right through the Adamas, and join the fun of Wing of the Moth by Friday.

  2. Well, with the gauntlet thrown down, the pressure is really on. I think you’ll finish on Saturday. 🙂 I can’t wait to see the FO pic.

  3. Adamas is lovely. She looks like a fun knit so you’ll have no problem working on her every spare minute but sadly you have a job so knitting with be interupted for that. I guess you’ll have a knit-a-thon beginning Friday evening and you’ll be done Sunday afternoon.

  4. Hmmm, publically challenged, internally motivated – I’m guessing Adamas will be finished Thursday by 10 pm. Have fun!!

  5. I’ve got the Wing of the Moth Pattern too! But I am definitely not racing. And I’m thinking you will finish Adamas Thursday at 8:45pm!

  6. Hmm, that’s an a$$-kick if I’ve ever heard one! 😉 (But a good, friendly, and potentially fun kick in the a$$.) I say 7 days for you to finish. Have fun.

  7. My guess is you’ve probably done a few repeats already last night and you’ll be finished in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

  8. Oh, right, like I could resist that merino laceweight. I say you finish the Adamas Friday at 1:30 am, just as the Red Sox are losing a 19-inning game by bobbling an easy grounder. (Why they still bother I do not know.)

  9. Adamas is in the wings for me too. I’m finishing my clapotis first. I’m going to say, my birthday, Wednesday 8-23, (I know, optimistic) at 10:22 PM. I can’t wait to see it finished!

  10. Lisa stole my answer but I’m still going to say Wednesday. 2.30am Wednesday morning. The wee sma’s. Because I know there are a couple of people who have already started and you’re not going to stand still for that one!

What yarn are you going to use for Moth? I love that pattern but I’m torn on yarn choices. And no, I don’t have enough of the Kidlin Pixie.

  11. I like how, in pay-it-forward fashion, throw down the gauntlet to the lurkers. NICE!

    Thursday, August 24 at 10:07pm.

  12. I think you’ll work every spare minute you have. I have no idea how many rows in a repeat, but I’m going to say 1 day per repeat and 1 day for the edge. So, my guess is Saturday.

  13. That Adamas Shawl is beautiful, and I’m guessing you’ll finish it late Sunday afternoon with enough time to spare so’s you can start the other one that night. 🙂

  14. I think moth-lust will drive you to finish FAST! You’ll be done by the weekend at the latest. Let’s say Saturday afternoon. 🙂

  15. Carole I love your blog, always so interesting and funny! I am de-lurking just for you! I think you’ll finish Adamas by Saturday at 2:43 pm. Good luck!

  16. throwing down the gaunlet – for real! whoa. great photo .
best guess??? August 27th (’cause that’s a whole mother-lode of stitches!)

  17. I love how you just happened to have a gauntlet for illustrative purposes! I am not going to guess, because I.do.not.want.any.more yarn.

  18. I see TWO gauntlets — does that mean it’s a double-dare? Or has someone else thrown THEIR gauntlet into the ring?

    ; )

Oh my goodness, I’ve never really knit lace, so I haven’t a clue about how long this is going to take you. I’ll say you’ll be finished and ready-to-block by bedtime on Wednesday.

Wait! What’s that? Is that another gauntlet? ; )

  19. Wow you have been thrown a challenge! I say you will finish Adamas on Wednesday evening! Cause you are anxious not to be left behind!!:)

  20. Dude. Who can lurk around here? I mean really! Tomatoes, mojitos, Native Americans wearing lace…..and then? Then you have to throw in a contest. For purple laceweight even.

Hmmmm…..let’s see…..5 repeats, then edging, tap, tap, tap…..I’m betting you finish in the wee hours of Sunday AM after staying up all night Saturday night just for that purpose so that you can cast on Sunday morning. Because we all know how important that Monday morning post is, yes?

Oh, someone else thinks Sunday morning too, eh? OK, how about…..3:48 AM 8/27?

  21. Now, you know that I am NO lurker, but I’m gonna play. You will finish on Sunday, August 27th at the conclusion of 60 minutes. Now, get knitting.

  22. I’ll guess Wednesday 8/30/06. I’m working on the same shawl and I’ll be done by Saturday ….. sometime in 2007.

  23. Well, no one can ignore a thrown gauntlet.

Now, what I DON’T know is how long it took you get as far as you have on Adamas. Then again, you haven’t been knitting on a deadline, so perhaps you’ll go faster now that you have a challenge. Hmmmmm.

I say you’ll finish Saturday night. Now, what are you doing reading comments? Go knit!!

  24. A needles duel–how exciting. I’ll say you finish Adamas by Friday evening…maybe around 9pm. Chug along, chug along 🙂

  25. Wednesday 8/23 9:45 pm.

I vote we turn this Wings of the Moth thing into a North Shore v. South Shore shawl-off. South Shore! South Shore! Gooooooo, Carole!
