Before our road trip, I cast on for a new Musselburgh hat. My grandson, Patrick…
Flower Basket Shawl
The Flower Basket Shawl had been on my “to knit” list for ages – before I even started knitting lace, in fact. The problem was, I had sort of moved beyond a beginner lace project and I wasn’t all that interested anymore. Then I had a moment of brilliance and decided to knit a Flower Basket Shawl for my dear friend Lois’ birthday.
The yarn is some unknown hand painted lace weight I had in the stash and the colors are perfectly Lois. While I generally prefer to knit shawls with solid color yarns, I do think this pattern works well with the variegated yarn. I knit 14 repeats of the flower basket pattern and used a size 4 Knit Picks options needle. It took me just about two weeks to complete the project. Hannah was thrilled to model it for me this week and I gifted it to Lois last night. She’s even more thrilled than Hannah and has promised to wear it on her European cruise this summer.
Sigh.
I suppose that one of my handknit items cruising through Europe is almost as good as cruising through Europe myself.
Sigh.

That is GORGEOUS! And will look beatiful on Lois — it’s a wonderful gift. We can always take the Ferry over to the Vineyard . . . (I know, not the same).
Pretty, pretty – model and shawl. 2 weeks, eh? It took me 2 months to finish that sucker 2 years ago. 18 repeats, but still.
Perhaps the shawl can send you postcards.
The shawl is beautiful and I think the yarn is perfect for the pattern. Lois is so lucky. Maybe you can stow away in her luggage. Hannah is a great model.
lovely, lovely gift Carole! Kathy might be onto something with the ferry idea – you two have enough wine, you can pretend you’re sailing anywhere!
the flowerbasket shawl has also been on my list and i love it in the variegated yarns. hannah’s doing a great job.
Beautiful Flower Basket Shawl! Lois is lucky in a few ways 😉
It’s absolutely lovely — the yarn works perfectly with the pattern. I really really like that colorway — those are Wendy colors too. 🙂
And what a cutie Hannah is!
The shawl is lovely and the pattern and yarn do enhance each other. I don’t do lace yet but this shawl is inspiring! I love the whole block of photos–they have such energy together. (sounds odd to say energy but I would need another cup of coffee to find a different word.) 🙂
It’s beautiful. To me, it looks as though Hannah wants one too.
I really, really like this one … the colors are pretty great on Hannah, too!
I made a FBS for my mother last year. It was a lot of fun to make, and is on my list of repeat lace projects.
Wow – great colors for that shawl. I can’t believe you got that done in two weeks! Do you knit in your sleep girl? I have some hand-dyed that needs a project. This might be a winner.
The shawl, and your photo montage, are beautiful. I don’t mind knitting simple lace, in fact, I guess at the moment that I prefer it! The yarn worked up perfectly in the pattern, too. Bon Voyage to the shawl…lucky devil.
Awesome…and Hannah is such a beautiful model!
I still love that pattern; easy but interesting. And it looks great in the yarn you chose.
Beautiful! It’s a perfect size too!
Beautiful! Both the shawl and your daughter. Great photos (as usual).
Pretty pretty! She is so lucky to get such a nice gift.
I always liked that pattern. I made it for my mom for mother’s day a few years ago, and I don’t think she’s worn it once. Phooey.
Oh, that IS pretty. I don’t usually like variegateds with lace, but this one really does work.
Is that, by any chance the laceweight in brown and red I dyed for you?
Beautiful!
It’s beautiful. Thanks for reminding me about how nice that pattern turns out. I bought it a while ago but I have yet to knit it.
Your shawl is beautiful! I started a Falling Leaves shawl before Christmas and after only 39 rows, it sits waiting for me. I just need too much concentration when I’m working on it. I’m so impressed that you produced your shawl in only two weeks. Maybe your friend will photograph it in some famous European locations!
Both the model and the shawl and yarn choice are all lovely!
And Flower Basket is easy? Hmm…interesting. 🙂
Hannah looks lovely! And the shawl too! I’m with you on the solid yarn for a lace project but I mus tsay the earthy colors in that yarn really translate well in floral lace pattern. Job very well done. I think you deserve to go to Europe and wear the shawl yourself ;o)
Lois is very lucky to have you for a friend. Beautiful shawl, beautiful model, and it looks like it was a beautiful day.
Gorgeous! Did you make the FBS promise to send you postcards?
Beautiful shawl! And the sigh bracketing the entire sentence about the shawl traveling Europe tells the truth about that being almost as good as you traveling Europe. 🙂
The shawl is just beautiful.
Gorgeous FBS!
WOW! It’s gorgeous!
And yes, it’s wonderful that it will go on a European cruise…
(sigh)
😉
To bad the shawl can’t write and send pictures from its camera phone along the way…
It’s beautiful! ia m sure she will love it.
Beautiful! But seriously, how do you crank out the socks and then knit this in two weeks? Do you sleep at all?! 😉
Sigh. My handknits have more adventures than I do – a Rose of England shawl just went to Rome. Sigh.
Simply beautiful–both the shawl and the model!
Gee, I never knew Hannah was a tree hugger. 😉
Your shawl is beautiful.
Maybe there should be some sort of clause that says a piece of lace can’t leave the country without the one who knit said lace.
Sometimes the simpler projects end up being the most satisfying ones. This shawl is just so well-designed, it’s a joy to knit! I love how you can knit as many full repeats as your yarn supply allows, and the edging will still work out with no math whatsoever. Brilliant.
Lovely colors. It is a wonderful FBS. Now, if I can just finish mine. Thanks for the inspiration, and motivation.
No. No, it’s not. That shawl should be on your passport, so you have to go with it.
It’s just lovely, Carole. Lovely model, too.
Beautiful shawl! Lucky Lois. And kudos to you for spreading your luck around.
What a lovely shawl. It shows off the yarn beautifully. What a kind and generous friend you are.
Ditto on the pretty lace.
But, poor Hannah, having to endure the cold weather with uncovered arms. I’m still in layers up here in the chilly North East.
Oh, it’s so lovely. I really do like that pattern everytime I see it and it looks great in a handpaint.
good stuff. Love the beads . they add a nice touch
What an incredibly lovely and gorgeous gift!
What a lovely gift! The yarn works well with the pattern and the beads are a nice accent. Your tree-hugging daughter models it well.
That yarn is perfect with that pattern. Let’s just take it on faith that the shawl is merely proceeding you to Europe! It could happen!
Maybe the shawl will send postcards?
It’s a perfect pattern for a variagated yarn and the shawl is lovely. The model is lovelier however!! Glad you didn’t gift her.
It’s beautiful, the handpainted yarn does look nice with the lace pattern. Sigh, hopefully the shawl will enjoy Europe.
That handpainted laceweight looks just perfect for the FBS! And Hannah looks just lovely modeling! 🙂
