Ten On Tuesday

You know I try to keep a positive attitude all the time – and it mostly works well for me. But sometimes, well, sometimes it’s fun to complain. And today’s Ten on Tuesday topic, which comes from dear Kym, is a complain-y type of one. Today I’m going to tell you about the 10 Chores I Hate Most.

  1. Putting away the laundry. The only time I didn’t mind this was when I was in college and I had ample closet and dresser drawer space. These days – with a teeny closet and small bedroom – it’s just a stinker. That’s why I have Dale do it.
  2. Dusting. Because, really, it’s no sooner done then it needs to be done again.
  3. Putting away the groceries. I don’t mind planning meals and shopping for food and cooking the food but putting the stuff away? Blech.
  4. Picking up after other people. This is probably my number 1 pet peeve about living with other people. I love my husband and my daughter dearly but ya know, I’m not the maid and it sure would be nice if they’d put their own crap away.
  5. Going to the bank. Hate.it.
  6. Cleaning the fridge. I don’t mind throwing out stuff that’s expired, I mean emptying out the fridge and washing the shelves and the bins. Dale is actually awesome at this and he always does it when I ask.
  7. Emptying the trash. It takes 2 seconds and yet – I hate it.
  8. Emptying the dishwasher. See #7.
  9. Washing windows. I can’t seem to do it without leaving big streaks, even using newspaper and doing this out of the direct sun.
  10. Cleaning the toilet. The first time I did this I was a young bride and I threw up. Now I just pay someone else to do it.

There are lots of chores that I actually don’t mind doing at all – vacuuming and organizing and cooking, washing the sheets and towels, running errands and more. I think the important thing is figuring out the stuff you really hate and getting someone else in your family to do it!

  1. I am so totally with you on the putting-laundry-away and putting-groceries-away. Hates ’em. (Actually, I agree with every single item on your list.)

  2. Good list and you hit all my favorite hates. Cleaning the fridge would be #1 on my list. I should wash it down more often!

  3. I read your comment on the dusting and immediately thought of Phyllis Diller. “Housework. You clean, you mop, you dust, and 6 months later you have to do it all over again!”

I dust when I feel like it since I would far prefer to have my windows open than live dust free.

  4. I had to chuckle about the bank. I hate it too but it’s part of my job so I deal with it. I am happy that they now have an app that allows you to scan deposits. No trip to the bank required.

  5. Yep, putting away the laundry – definitely my most-hated chore! I don’t mind cleaning the bathrooms (even the toilets), but that dishwasher unload/reload thing drives me bonkers.

  6. There seems to be a theme here–you don’t like putting stuff away. I don’t mind it since we remodeled and the kitchen and bedroom closet are much more commodious. However, I have faith that I,can overload them before long! Right now, vacumming is a pain. Between a recent hailstorm and the advent of autumn, the dogs manage to bring in a new crop of leaves within minutes!

  7. Dusting is the only chore I really despise that I can’t persuade Neal to do for me. I try to make it palatable by putting on good music, but it still doesn’t work…

  8. I agree with you about the laundry & emptying the dishwasher.
I would rather hand wash dishes than empty the dishwasher.

  9. This list gave me a good laugh, especially #4. I would add to that shutting drawers and closet doors. There must be some genetic trait that makes my husband and his children (who are mine, too!) unable to do that. As long as I am not actively poisoning my family, I can live with the fridge. As long as people are not sneezing all the time (unless company is coming) I would rather knit than dust. Bizarrely, I like washing, drying and putting away laundry – it’s clean and it smells nice; that eccentricity might be due to my partially Dutch ancestory.

  10. boy that Dale is a keeper! Marc doesn’t mind unloading the dishwasher or folding/putting away his laundry…but I hate to have him do it since it’s kind of my day job. glad I could justify paying someone to dust for me, though!

  11. Picking prescriptions up at the pharmacy…pretty sure the pharmacist is none to fond of me…either.

  12. Picking prescriptions up at the pharmacy…pretty sure the pharmacist is none to fond of me…either.

  13. I’m not sure what it is about putting away laundry, but I hate it too! I can get the clothes in the washer and then to the dryer, but I always drag my feet on getting them from there to the drawers.

  14. The mindless stuff doesn’t bother me – laundry, dishes, vacuuming. I no longer fetch dishes and clothes from my kids. My least favorite thing is picking up after someone else – so I stopped doing it! I am a miserable organizer. Come to Boise and have fun helping me figure out a place for everything!
