Stand By Me

I had a post all set for today but then yesterday afternoon I got a text from Bob. And that text prompted me to write an update on Caring Bridge. And then I decided you all needed to know, too. So the post I had today, the one about redoing our front hallway? It can wait. This is more important.

A couple of weeks ago I went to a Dale and the Duds show at the East Bridgewater Jr/Sr High School. The guys were only playing for a short time, helping out at a fundraiser for the Music Parents. They opened their set with “Stand By Me,” a song that is sung by Bob. You know how it goes, right?

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No, I won’t be afraid
Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me
Stand by me

If the sky, that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry
No, I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

I was going to post about this right after the show because I just kept thinking about how appropriate those lyrics are for Bob’s situation. How much it means to him to know we are all out in the world, standing by him and praying for him, and thinking about him and holding him close in our thoughts. I didn’t post, though. Things got busy and then I thought, well, no news is good news and until I say otherwise everyone reading here will know that things are going along fine.

You know what I’m about to say next, don’t you?

Things are not fine anymore. Bob had a PET scan on Monday and the scan showed that the cancer is back. It’s in the same places as before and, while the current situation isn’t as bad as his original diagnosis last June, well, the fact that it’s back is not a good sign. He will be increasing his chemo treatments to weekly now, and hopefully he will be able to tolerate those treatments well.

So. We all know the power of prayer. We all know the value of encouragement and support from friends. And we all know just how much Bob means to each of us. I’m asking all of you to pray for Bob.

Right now. However you do it. Pray. And please know that by praying you are truly standing by Bob. You are helping him to not be afraid, you are inspiring him to fight and you are showing him how very much he is loved.
