To celebrate Halloween, I'm sharing 3 photos of Dale and I from back in the…
Three On Thursday
It’s hard to believe but we’re already almost a week into October. You know that June is my favorite month, with long days and abundant sunshine, warm temperatures and the promise of summer. October is sort of the opposite of all of that and yet it’s probably my second favorite month. Today I’m sharing three things I love about October.
- It’s cozy season. Pretty much everyone who visits my house describes it as cozy and they’re not wrong. I love pillows and soft blankets and candles and twinkle lights. And, while those things are useful year round, they are particularly lovely now after a summer of long days and warm nights. I don’t love that the days are shorter but I do love that it means I can turn on the lights earlier and really embrace the cozy. Plus there are fall decorations like leaves and pumpkins to make things even prettier around the house, both inside and out.
- Speaking of outside, everything out there is gorgeous. Summer flowers like zinnias and dahlias are still going strong, at least until we have a hard frost, plus the leaves are turning and the cranberries are being harvested. It’s an explosion of color not just in my yard but every time I get in the car. We don’t get the great swaths of color light they do in New Hampshire and Vermont but we do have our fair share of foliage and it’s often breathtaking.
- Comfort food. After weeks of grilling and eating local vegetables, it’s time for the comforts of meatloaf and mashed potatoes, chili and corn bread, beef stew and homemade sourdough bread. There’s nothing like the smell of a pot roast or chicken in the oven and that warms the house as much as the first fire in the wood stove . . . which generally comes some time in October.
Do you love October, too? Tell me why in the comments! And, if you wrote a post for today, please include a link. Thanks.

I love the bright blue skies, the pumpkins on the doorstep, and bite-size Halloween candies. (Those weensy wrappers are filling up our wastebaskets!)
It is absolutely gorgeous here! Peak foliage is this weekend on. I’ve already begun to wear sweaters and the wood stove has been put to use.
I think October is my favorite also, mainly because of the cooler temperatures. It’s still not quite cool enough for me, but it’s coming. And the first time I make meatloaf and mashed potatoes will be a wonderful day!
I love most everything about October, but mostly the cooler temps, the very clear blue skies, and the coziness of it all. We don’t have as much foliage color here, but what we have is lovely.
Those are three great things about October, Carole, and I agree heartily with all three! I’m starting to feel ready for some hunkering down — but insisting I don’t need shoes and socks quite yet! 🙂
Crisp air, crunchy leaves, clear blue sky (but not today)… those are some of the things I love about October! And I’m with Kym; I’ll be wearing sandals until I just can’t bear it anymore.
Well, my feet are cold! BUT, I love Fall and October. Leaves turnng, pumpkins, winter squashm candles at dinner time. I’m a happy camper (and I was really camping last week!~!).
I’m reading your posts in reverse order so on the Friday one I mentioned how much I love dahlias, then I read the Thursday post with zinnias and …oh yeah, I love zinnias too. Actually there are very few flowers I don’t like at all (Euphorbias are in there). 🙂
Here in England, it has to be October skies and clouds, which are so beautiful this time if year.
