My Summer Theme 2023

Gretchen Rubin talks every year on her podcast about “designing” your summer. And the other day, Kym wrote about having a summer theme. I’ve been thinking about this a lot and these two women prompted me to come up with my own summer motif and I’m declaring it:

The Summer of Connection.

Now. I’m a well known introvert. And yet, when I look back over my Gratitude Journal (I write 5 things I’m grateful for in a journal every morning and I’m on a 1,383 day streak) the things I tend to list involve . . . wait for it . . . connection. With a family member. With a friend. With a colleague. With a neighbor. Even, occasionally, with myself. So this summer, I will be looking for connection.

I did a mind map of this in my journal and have decided my connection will be divided into 3 areas: with other people, with the outdoors, and with my own dreams. The other people connection includes things like Pergola Thursdays, camping, and saying yes to opportunities and invitations. The outdoors connection is all about my garden and time on the deck, going to the beach, going for walks, and (again) camping. And the connection with my own dreams will give me quiet time with reading and meditating, focusing on body neutrality and pursuit of health, and even taking care of some projects around my house.

So here’s to my Summer of Connection! I’m hoping it brings lots of good things my way. And plenty of blog fodder, too.

  1. I especially like the idea of connecting with yourself. It has been a wild year over here and I am also feeling the need to reconnect with myself and my dreams. Feels like you are on a good path Carole.

  2. Connection is almost always a good thing (connection with the outdoors might need to wait until the smoke clears)!

  3. What a lovely way to plan your summer! Can’t wait to (virtually) ride along! Have fun!

  4. Hi, fellow introvert here, and I am totally behind this idea! I love how you’ve mentally divided it into different categories of connection so that it’s not just about being with lots of people. Can’t wait to get updates on how it’s going all summer!

  5. i was writing in a journal every night but then my cat got diagnosed with Lymphoma and the journaling, yoga and any exercise stopped. I had to put my cat down June 1st so I really need to get back into the journaling and work my way back to doing what I was.

  6. This is brilliant, Carole! I can’t wait to see what connections you make this summer! XO

  7. I LOVE this idea! I have often chose a word of the year. This year, however, has been tough to even remember my word. I like the idea of a theme for each portion of my year. I am going to join you! Not sure yet what my summer theme is, but I know it will be a great way to focus on having the best summer ever.
