Currently: July 2023

We’re at the mid point of July and that means it’s time to take a look at what’s going on around here currently . . .

Knitting: a dishtowel (yes, the same one) and a hat and not making great progress on either

Reading with my eyes: ARCs. I just finished Pet by Catherine Chidgey and I’m about to start Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward

Reading with my ears: All Souls: A Family Story from Southie by Michael Patrick MacDonald

Watching: We just finished Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and it was excellent

Eating: local corn and it’s so good!

Recommending: The newest podcast from Serial Productions, The Retrievals.

Growing: (and cutting): Dahlias and zinnias. I came home from camping to find 3 dahlis plants in bloom and the zinnias are blooming, too!

Loving: working air conditioning! We haven’t had working AC at my library for 3 summers but it was replaced last winter and it’s functioning now and it’s great. I’m a summer girl but I’m getting tired of these humid days, friends.

Celebrating: Jackie lost his first tooth last night! Hard to believe he’s old enough for this milestone but here we are.

What’s going on with you right now?

  1. I am happy your flowers have begun to bloom! I so enjoy the images you share of them!!

And this humidity (and heat and smoke!!) Just ugh!

  2. Sounds like your summer is going well! Your reading seems intense to me (both eyes and ears) – I’m looking forward to the Jesmyn Ward book (and I just downloaded “Where the Line Bleeds” by her – currently free on Audible!!). Our zinnias are not doing much, but our snap dragons are wonderful (and the deer don’t bother them). I am anxious for some local corn!!

  3. I can’t imagine not having working a/c at the library for three years! That’s half the reason I go to my libraries in the summer, and it seems to be a big draw for others, too. I’m wondering how much inflation has affected what the tooth fairy brings?!

  4. I can’t believe Jackie has already lost a tooth!!! But . . . I guess it makes sense! He is growing up so fast — and summer is just rushing by . . .

  5. Our library also has a new HVAC system and working air conditioning this summer…what a difference from last year!
High humidity, smoke, and temps in the upper 80s have made it very uncomfortable to spend much time outside these past few days. I take my walk and do gardening tasks early in the morning.
I wonder the same thing Bonny asked about the tooth fairy!

  6. Oh my goodness, Jackie!! He’s just gonna be the cutest gap-toothed kid!

Ginny’s lost a couple of bottom teeth but her top ones are stubborn! haha.

  7. I cannot imagine going through summer without air conditioning, especially this summer, so I’m relieved that it’s working at the library! I’m also enjoying (though that feels like the wrong word for such a sad story) The Retrievals. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Let Us Descend.

  8. !!! new Jesmyn Ward AND the tooth fairy … sounds lovely. We’re eating tomatoes and hoping for rain.
