Sharing Sad News

I’m back from vacation with some very sad news to share. My much loved father-in-law, Jack, died on Saturday. He’d been in the hospital since late in June and, while it was a bit of a roller coaster, we had every hope that he would come home to convalesce. That was not to be, however, and his loss is huge for my family.

I think I’ve shared enough stories over the years that you know he meant the world to all of us. I’m feeling fragile and sad and as if all the oxygen has been removed from my world. I know this feeling will pass but for right now I’m allowing the grief to wash over me in whatever way it comes.

You’ve helped me through sad times before and I thank you in advance for your support and kindness as we navigate these uncharted waters without our family patriarch.

My sister wrote this poem years ago and I always find solace reading it. I hope you do to.

    On This Day of Days

I stand in your sore doorway

    a solemn caller

    on this day of days.

    Pale faces on queue

    Shocked and impotent, we mourn.

    The loss is unfathomable

    the pain, absolute,

    on this day of days.

    Comfort is a cold cloth,

A damp dressing for an abysmal wound.

    But then…the lovely, longing words:

    “I remember when,

    that day of days.”

    His story told in whispers,

    Weaving soft along the cortege.

Bits of love like petals bloom,

    from a closed, sad bud.

    On this day of days.

    His life, alive within us,

    Breathes a million memories.

Who once stood tall among us

    held fast inside each heart

    for days on days.

    He rides with every footstep

    Toward each eternity.
