Weekend Glimmers, Jan 19th-21st, 2024

Glimmers . . . moments that spark joy, contentment, and peace, making me feel that all is well and I am right where I belong . . .

This weekend was all about the Massachusetts Municipal Association Conference.

I spent time with colleagues who are also great friends. We all went to the Friday evening receptions together, migrating from the top of the Prudential Building to a steakhouse to an upscale casual dining location. I also went to the WEMO (Women Elected Municipal Officials) Luncheon on Friday afternoon. I remember being so nervous about attending that the first time I went to the conference, worrying about who I would sit with like a kid at a new school heading to the cafeteria. This year I just plunked down at an empty table and waited for women to come and join me. I made some new friends and contacts and it was perfect.

I heard excellent and inspiring speakers. The Saturday morning line up included Senator Ed Markey and Senator Elizabeth Warren, as seen in this photo. Also speaking over the weekend were other elected officials, including Governor Maura Healey, Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. Gina McCarthy spoke on climate change and made us all laugh despite the dire situation. And Eddie Glaude Jr spoke on Democracy and Race in America and he was amazing. I read his book Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own back in 2020 and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to hear him in person.

Dale and I had fun shopping at Eataly, buying some cheese and wine, a couple of cannoli, chocolates and cookies. I also saw this fabulous sign. It’s probably the only thing Hemingway ever said that I agree with.

And finally, a shout out to Kym and Tom, who I think of anytime I see Bell’s Two Hearted available locally.

I hope your weekend left you feeling inspired and energized and ready for the week ahead.
