It was a relaxing and mostly at-home weekend once again, as is my preference this…
Weekend Glimmers Jan 3rd-5th, 2025
The first weekend of 2025 was jam-packed with . . . relaxation and fun. It was the epitome of winter weekends for me, honestly.
I read a lot. In fact, I finished my first book of the new year, Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar. It was excellent, as I expected given the recommendations I’ve gotten from friends on this one.
I put away the . . . obvious . . . Christmas decor. The Santas and little signs that are purely holiday themed. The Christmas mugs and angel chimes. You get the idea. And by put away, what I really mean is that I piled it all haphazardly on the dining room table and Dale carefully wrapped it up and stored it in the attic.
The trees are all still up and I have 7. One is the big tree that is decorated with ornaments and that will come down this weekend. I have 2 three foot, 1 four foot, and 1 six foot that are alpine style, flocked and with lights but no ornaments. I also have a tall flocked tree in our bedroom and a smaller flocked tree in my studio. Those will still up until the end of February or so, along with the twinkle lights on the mantel and in various other spots throughout the house. I need the cheer of those trees and lights to get me through the cold days ahead so don’t judge me on that.
Back to the weekend, though . . .
We had our first at home date of the year and it was my turn to plan it. Did I tell you about this? I can’t remember if I did or not but, in a nutshell, we are committing ourselves to 2 dates per month, one at home and one outside the house, and we take turns planning what we do. There aren’t really any rules except that it needs to include more than just food, there has to be an activity, too.
So, Saturday was on me, and I told Dale to show up in the living room at 3:30 wearing either pink or green. I got pink and green candy from the store and I made a bowl of popcorn. Can you figure out the activity? Dale couldn’t and I thought it was so obvious. We watched the movie Wicked. I had already gone to see it with Hannah back in November but Dale hadn’t seen it yet and he really enjoyed it. He also really enjoyed the candy. ha!
After the movie we had a cocktail and talked about all of it and then I made dinner. I think it was a successful at home date and I’m pretty sure Dale agrees.
And that was the weekend. I’m back to work today and I suppose I will admit to feeling ready for something of a routine. Maybe not a routine that includes leaving the house in the cold of the morning but here we are and that’s what we’re doing.
Hope you have a great day!
Now that sounds like a lovely weekend and the candy and popcorn look pretty lovely too! I have yet to take down any of the Christmas things…but honestly, I did not put up much this year. We have a small, live, table-top tree that is decorated (and is still drinking water, so that’s good). My birch log with candles is still on the buffet (along with the jewel tree that Fletcher’s Mom made us decades ago). That’s really it!
You planned a great date, one I would have happily attended!
Christmas comes down here today! (But yes to leaving those twinkle lights up!!) The only Christmas that will “stay out” are the things I got from my grandkids! They are too special to pack away just yet…
Have a fabulous NORMAL week! Haha! XO
Sounds like a pretty good weekend for January. Thanks for reminding me I want to watch ‘Wicked’, which I can almost guarantee will be alone. Routine resumes today here too. Going out in the brutal cold resumes tomorrow. Blergh.
I love your date idea! My tree with ornaments is coming down today, but I may leave my pencil tree that only has lights up for awhile. It does make me happy.
What a perfect date night, Carole. (Tom and I had a similar date night – with WIcked but without candy or color-coordinated outfits – on New Year’s Day.) I love this date-night plan for you guys! And I did the same with my holiday decor over the weekend. I took down all the obvious-Santa-ish stuff and did some re-shuffling of everything else. Sadly, all my stuff is still sitting on my dining room table. And Tom is a non-participant, so it may sit there a while longer . . .
I hope your week is just as nice as your weekend was!
I’m keeping my Christmas decorations up for a few more days and will take my time putting it all away.
What a great date!! I haven’t seen WICKED yet, but it’s on my list (and would like to see it in the theater at least once before it’s gone).
What a great date idea! I might have to copy you — we didn’t get around to seeing Wicked in the theater when we were on vacation, so I think we’re planning to watch it at home, and it’ll be much more fun with themed snacks! I also don’t blame you for leaving up the decorations and light that make these dark, cold months easier to get through.
At home date – great idea!
