Weekend Glimmers, March 14th-16th, 2025

It’s Monday and I’m happy to report that there was very little droopiness over the weekend. I protected my peace, hung out at home, and even remembered to take some photos to share with all of you.

Friday night we had oysters and they were so good. Small and briny and shucked by Dale, they paired perfectly with an icy cold martini and some good music and conversation.

Saturday night we had corned beef and cabbage in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. The meat was salty and tender, the vegetables were plentiful (and I mashed my potatoes and carrots together just the way my mom always did) and the table was festive. Bonus for leftovers that I turned into corned beef hash with poached eggs on Sunday morning. And there’s still plenty left for dinner tonight, too.

I spent a little time clearing out the hellebores, removing the leaves that had been protecting them over the winter, and cutting back all of last year’s leaves to reveal tender new shoots coming up all around. I have 4 varieties and think there’s certainly room for more. Plant shopping is in my future!

I also checked around the yard and found these yellow crocus by the kitchen door. They are a nice bright pop of color in an otherwise dreary garden bed right now.

Those are my weekend highlights, I hope you had some good moments this weekend, too.

  1. Your crocus look so lovely! Thank you for sharing a photo of them… mine have been decimated again by our local bunnies. Sigh. Happy Monday!

  2. That dinner sounds like the kind I like – cook once and then get a couple other good meals out of it. I’m not a big fan of corned beef and cabbage but I wouldn’t mind some hash for breakfast. And your hellebores and crocus are lovely!

  3. Yum! And your lovely flowering buds are so hopeful and cheerful. Thanks for sharing your lovely weekend with me, Carole.

  4. Looks like a lovely weekend Carole! We had our corned beef dinner at C&M’s yesterday…and Colin is planning to make some corned beef has from some of the leftovers. I think I need to get some hellebores! Yours are lovely as are your yellow crocus.

  5. Sounds like a really nice weekend! Raw oysters are my absolute favorite thing. And I think we have the best oysters here in New England. The hellebores look lovely. It’s nice to finally see some green peeking up and the early flowers!

  6. Those are some lovely glimmers, Carole. Mmm, I love oysters! Not sure I want the whole corned beef dinner this year, but someone just sent me a recipe for Colcannon soup, and I might give that a go. I haven’t seen any flowers around here yet (can’t wait to spot my first “pop” of color), but I’m starting to see the tiniest bit of “greening” — and I’ll take what I can get!! I still spot little bits of snow here & there in areas protected from the sun.

  7. That sounds like an excellent weekend! We had what my mother called “Jewish St. Patrick’s Day” dinner yesterday — corned beef with latkes! I’m thankful she didn’t serve us steamed cabbage like she used to when I was growing up. I’ll eat cabbage in a slaw, but just steamed is not to my taste.
