Summer Reading, now in the RWU Lounge

Do you remember the days of summer reading as a kid? For me, it was trips to the library to bring home stacks of books. Long afternoons in the backyard reading in the shade. A giant L.L. Bean tote bag of books to take on vacation. Reading in bed by flashlight. (Okay, I may have done that year round.) And, probably most important of all, the glorious freedom of reading whatever I felt like on any given day.

Somewhere along the way, we started making summer reading more complicated than it needed to be. We turned it into spreadsheets, prompts, goals, and tracking apps. Bingo cards that forced you to look at your TBR and find a book with a blue cover. Assigned reading and deadlines and productivity over pleasure.

This summer, Bonny and Kym and I are proposing something different.

We’re opening the Read With Us Lounge.

In the lounge you are free to . . .

Read whatever delights you.

Read whatever keeps you turning pages.

Read whatever makes you forget to check your phone.

Read whatever makes you stay up too late.

Read whatever makes you happy.

There may be prizes but there’s no competition. No pressure. No homework. Just permission to enjoy reading again. The Lounge will be open all summer long, and we’ll be dropping in every Monday with book talk, recommendations, fun topics, and the occasional prize.

So grab a book, pull up a chair, and join us this summer in the Read With Us Lounge.

  1. Yes, I love this! I always looked forward to summer reading. I was one of those kids who read all year long, but during the summer I read so much more because of all the extra time. Sadly I don’t get summers off anymore, but summer still feels like reading season to me!

  2. I am so glad that I won’t have to look for a book with a blue cover or fill out a bingo card!

  3. I confess, I do not miss Summer Book Bingo… the struggle was real to find things that “worked” and that I wanted to read! This sounds like a delightful way to spend the summer!!

  4. My first “summer reading program” at the Wapato Public Library involved a pumpkin seed. I wish I could remember more, like, why. But I still can find books on the shelf there in my mind.

  5. I always loved spending my summers going to the library and reading whatever I wanted to read. I’m really looking forward to this!

  6. Fun! I spent yesterday putting together a list of books I want to read this summer. Some are older that I keep forgetting about and some are new or for my local bookclub. I have also been trying to also have a short story collection or memoir also nearby when I have a few minutes and just want to read a bit. It was weird at first having 2 books going but it’s been working out well.

  7. This sounds like a great idea. I just walked right by the Summer Reading Challenge at my public library today. I’m all for encouraging everyone to read but those challenges (as an adult) never did much for me. I just had a conversation with my granddaughter about reading a stack of library books being one of my most loved “summer things” when I was a kid.
