Sock Stash

Hi. My name is Carole and I have a sock yarn problem.

It’s a little scary that it took 4 pictures to capture all of my sock yarn on film. There’s enough yarn there for 39 pairs of socks. Whoa.

Now granted, some of it, like the Cherry Tree Hill, could be used for shawls and scarves. And some of it is crap yarn that I bought back when I didn’t know what to buy. But still. There’s some great stuff there. Like Vesper and Socks that Rock and Opal. Honestly, most all of it is gorgeous yarn that needs to be knit up into gorgeous socks.

I love sock yarn. I love buying sock yarn. And I have no intention of stopping.

My name is Carole and I don’t have a sock yarn problem at all.

  1. Holy cow! That is some sock yarn pile! I don’t have a sock yarn problem, but I do have Fleece Mountain here. I don’t see it as a problem. I see it as who has the most when they die wins! 😉

  2. Wow! I thought I had a sock yarn problem with enough for 15 pair stashed away. I bow to your superiority!

Some of those colors look luscious!

  3. Okay, I’ll stop harassing you about your stash being too small. Still, you are a socknitter, and you really have to have inspirational materials. And that’s some beautiful, inspriational yarn you got there.

Plus, I don’t see anything terrible there. Where’s the crap yarn? The Elann? Nothin’ wrong with that.

    Thanks for showing the stash.

  4. Keep going, you are catching up with me. Unless I get some more. Like what color is that STR in the bottom left corner of the bottom photo? I need that! 🙂

  5. Okay . . . that’s more than I’ve got, so I feel pretty good, but really, what’s the problem?? (grin) I don’t see a problem here!

  6. oh God I haven’t even counted mine. I’m skeered.

Looks like yours has grown a bit since I saw it ;o)’tis beautiful!

  7. Oooooooo… I am uber envious! I LOVE sock yarn with all of my heart and I have very little. I have decided that this must be remedied, as sock yarn is not technically stash, right? Because it’s useful and it makes items of clothing with relative ease. And in the buddhist sense, the unknit yarn, is really ALREADY socks if it was purchased with the intent of making socks, because time is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, and therefore since it’s already socks in some phase of life, then it’s not stash, right? RIGHT? 😉

  8. Ooh, that bottom picture has some gorgeous handdyed(?) skeins. I’m not a sock knitter. At all. Yet all these sock posts stir up some strange socky feeling in me…

  9. Oh Carole I’m so jealous. I only have one pair of Vesper socks and stalk kpixie daily trying to get more yarn.

  10. I love sock yarn, too! My problem: I’m a one-sock wonder. But I have a plan!! After I finish this one project that I’ve been struggling with, I hope to become a 2 sock wonder. Pretty sweet plan, huh?

  11. I see some that looks all to familar there….heeehee Like the Opal, Vesper, STR, Cherry Tree Hill, trekkingXXL, hmm elann.coms, mountain colors, hmmm should I go on.. Nope I DON”T see NO PROBLEM because of course that’d mean I have a problem here too! Love sock yarn LOVe buying more sock and will NOT stop! Have sock yarn will purchase…heehee Have you any Apple Laine? so close to the mountain colors YUMMY! and and can’t forget how much fiber to make into sock yarn.. working on that myself…but were not addicted are we?
Dont’ forget Flash your stash day April 1st~!

  12. I’m sorry, dear. I cannot help you until you admit a problem and acknowledge that you want to be helped.

Pffffft on psychobabble. It makes you happy. Buy more. 😉

  13. That’s a lot of sock yarn! At least you actually use it. Makes me want to count mine too but my problem is that I don’t actually knit much of it. I love Miriam’s comment. So true. I’m going with it anyway!

  14. To paraphrase a t-shirt popular in my youth, you don’t have a sock-yarn problem. You buy sock yarn, your shelves fill up, you build more shelving. No problem.

(Hello, my name is Lucia and I am Queen of Denial.)

  15. Holy moley! Now I know where all of the red sock yarn in Massachusetts resides. My lil’ pile has a major inferiority complex next to that big pile o’sock yarn. You have your own “gallery of sold out Vesper skeins”, lol!

  16. What I think is admirable is taht you do have quite a few singles. I tend to buy TWO of everything. I’m just never satisfied with reading labels with things like “May make one pair of men’s socks, or eight pairs of women and 5 pairs of children’s socks”. WTF??? I get one for each foot. Just saying. Nice stash, though. Love lots of those colors.

  17. Ya know, I’ve been thinking with all the folks showing off their huge sock stash, there must be something wrong with me cause I don’t have a stash like that. But then, I went out to feed the rabbits and laughed – it’s just in pre-yarn form.

  18. Can I come over and roll around in your stash? I promise to keep my clothes on 🙂

    FABULOUS STASH!!!

  19. I have sock yarn for something like 23 pairs of socks. And I’ve only been knitting socks for a year and have 4 completed pair. That’s pretty bad, as well!

  20. Oh, honey. I have you beat. Badly. I’m doing Knittyboard’s Flash Your Stash on April 1 and will admit to my excess in all it’s glory that day.

  21. Wowweee! I want to roll in your sock yarn! *sniff-sniff* Is that fresh yarn I smell?

I’m a huge fan of sock yarn. Now I’m a huge fan of YOUR sock yarn.

  22. You are not alone. We are here for you. What’s funny to me is that I have atleast that much, and yet I look at yours and think “I want all that.” Very nice collection. Atleast it doesn’t spoil.

  23. Is it bad that when I look at your sock yarn I say, “Wow,” in a hushed tone and then try to identify the yarns I haven’t used yet? For instance: What’s the one with the star on the tags in the top picture? And what’s the color way for the green and yellow CTH? I’ve been regretting not buying that one in the store and can’t find it online. How about that pretty rainbow one on the far right in the second picture? So beautiful, so varied. Sigh.

  24. You are definitely ready for any yarn famine contingency. I’ll file it for future reference, (you know, when the sock yarn drought starts). Aside form my stack o’ bins, I’d be afraid to flash the stash. Good for you.

  25. Nice stash! I am still fighting the urge to keep buying sock yarn, until I’ve knit up some of my stash. Take a look at mine (on my blog); wouldn’t you rather have your stash than mine? ;o) Happy knitting & stashing!

  26. Wowy zowy – amazing stash, Carole! My sock stash is growing pretty darn fast… before to long, it may be as big as yours! 😉 The one that really caught my eye is that lovely Mountain Colors (?) red hank right in the middle of the 2nd pic… I guess I am only seeing red and pink lately! 😉

  27. Wait a minute – wasn’t there some talk a while back – something about your stash being on the smaller side. I think not. Beautiful yarn!

So, you want to go shopping for more :)?

  28. You have a ways to go before you have a real problem! I think I’m up to 76 pairs now (there was an issue last week and I bought more sock yarn in order to achieve piece of mind). I can see knitting 76 pairs of socks before I die so it isn’t a problem:O)

  29. you call that a sock stash. where do you keep it ( in case the sock yarn theives want to make a run there)

  30. Your sock stash rocks! You have some wicked ass sock yarn there. No wonder the stash is that big; with yarn that good looking it yearns for company. There is some serious drawing power with a sock stash that good looking; it will be hard to contain. Erego, you are going to have to get some more!

  31. OH Carole! What a nice sock stash! I love the 5th blue skein from the left in the first photo! What is that? Closeup please! GRIN

  32. Yah – I was going to say… I don’t see a problem. And as my mum always says “Come the revolution….” you’ll be set.

  33. Wow! Can I come over for a playdate??? 🙂 39 pairs of socks, huh? Well, I wear a size 10…(hehe!). I’m jealous of all that beautiful yarn!!
