Mexico 2013

As I imagine you have surmised, our trip to Mexico was fantastic. It was, in my opinion, the best vacation I’ve ever had. The weather was perfect, the location was beautiful, and the company was ideal.

We stayed in small beach hotel in Tulum, about 90 minutes south of Cancun. It was most decidedly not a big all-inclusive resort and I probably wouldn’t have chosen this route if we weren’t traveling with Sharon and Al. They have been to Mexico many times and I knew going with them meant that we could do more of a choose-your-own-vacation type of trip. We were free to wander the beach, visit any restaurants we wanted, and go on excursions on our own. Ours was not the fanciest hotel in the area but it had everything we needed, including bar service on the beach. And I quite literally stepped out of our front door into the sand.

While we were there we went snorkeling at Akumal. Now, snorkeling isn’t my thing but Dale loves it and I was willing to give it a shot since I knew the fish would be pretty. And they were. I have no idea what they were but the colors were vibrant and lovely.  We also snorkeled in a cenote which was completely different from the lagoon and it was really cool when the bats were flying over our heads in the cave.

We also visited the ruins and they were pretty amazing. It’s awesome to think about how old they are and how they represent a time period long gone.

And we shopped! We brought home blankets and jewelry and clothing and more. It was fun to talk with the different shop owners and haggle for the best price. Spending pesos wasn’t like spending real money anyway and I had to keep telling myself “divide by 12” every time I looked at the price of something.

We had some fantastic dinners and fell in love with ceviche. And we drank lots and lots of cerveza and tequila. We danced to a local band, we met some great women from Austria, we played and partied hard and truly loved every minute we were there.

Finally, because I can’t decide which photos to share, here’s a slide show of all of them. Enjoy!

I’m sure you can understand why I can’t wait to go back next year!
